It took about an hour by car from Akita Airport to get there. Oga is so famous that it brings to mind the name Namahage, but there was much I didn't know about its origins. Inside the museum, there are displays of Namahage made from various materials from each region of the Oga Peninsula, which made for a very interesting tour. If you visit the adjacent Oga Shinzan Folk Museum, you can learn even more about the local customs.

When you think of Oga, the first thing that comes to mind is the Namahage. There is a huge Namahage statue in front of the tourist information center at the entrance to the Oga Peninsula, and there was also a Namahage in the lobby of the hotel in Oga Onsen where I was staying. After leaving the hotel in Oga Onsen, the first place I headed to was the Namahage Museum.
Namahage masks vary depending on the area, even in Oga. Inside the museum there is a "Namahage All-In-One Corner" where Namahage masks and costumes that have been handed down in each of the 60 areas scattered around the Oga region are on display. The "Namahage Transformation Corner" where you can try on real Namahage costumes and have your photo taken is also fun.

ユネスコ無形文化遺産「来訪神：仮面・仮装の神々」の一つ、「なまはげ」の博物館です。
北は秋田の「なまはげ」から南は宮古島の「パーントゥ」と10件だそうです。そして「来訪神」、いわゆる「神」としての扱いがそのエリアならではであり、特別であり、興味深いです。「なまはげ」でいうと「鬼」ではなく、「神」なんですよね。
「なまはげ」は、たいてい「角がある鬼仮面」をイメージすると思いますが、実は「角のない仮面」も存在するようです。もともとは「鬼仮面」ではないようですよ。
また、「鬼」のイメージも「悪いもの、恐ろしいもの」としてのイメージが一般的にあると思いますが、一方で「強いもの、ずば抜けているもの」というプラスの鬼のイメージもあります。個人的にはこの良いイメージ「鬼」のほうが男鹿の「鬼仮面」=「来訪神」に繋がったのかなと思われます。
まぁーこれはともかく、そのエリアの歴史、生活風習に密接にかかわっている「無形文化遺産」、これは本当に特別なものであり、残していってほしいです。
なお、観光的には、この「なまはげ館」でずらりと並んでいる「なまはげ」は圧巻ですよ。ぜひ訪れてみてください。

Namahage museum is a fun alternative to other museums. The performance is worth seeing though may scare younger children! Since we don't speak Japanese we were provided with a tablet outlining the play which was good. This was provided for a number of different languages. The grounds are beautiful to walk around and enjoy. And you can finish off with a gelati served by an elderly woman outside.

展示場だけでなく「なまはげ」の実演を見て下さい。
隣接する真山伝承館でみれます。３０分間隔の公演、２０分間の実演です。
映像などではわからないなまはげの凄さ、こわさが体感できます。
伝承館で体験してから展示をみると見方がかわるかもしれません。

30分位の間隔で映像作品を見る事が出来ますが、必見です。行事の歴史的な意味合い、準備の様子、行事当日(大晦日)の準備、家々を巡る様、子供たちの恐れ慄く様、行事の締め方を実際の映像で見る事が出来ます。
特に子供の恐れ方、隠れ方、なまはげを目の前にした時のリアクションはガチなだけに涙を流して笑いましたが、なまはげ襲来→家族から助けられる様を見ていくうちに笑いの涙が家族の絆に感動する涙へと変わっていきました。近年なまはげは児童虐待ではないかと浅薄な意見もあるようですが、けしてそんなものではないと通して見るとわかっていただけるはずです。

なまはげ館は展示を中心にしたメイン施設で、なまはげ実演が行われる男鹿真山伝承館と一対を成す施設です。皆さん、なまはげ実演をお目当てなので、実演時間までの時間を利用して、あるいは、実演後にざっと展示を見る感じでした。特に、迫力があるのは、男鹿の各地区で実際に使われていたなまはげ面１５０個（うち、１１０体が立像）の展示室。実物大のなまはけが集団で押し寄せてくる感じ、結構、真剣に見入って、カメラを向けてました。

男鹿と言えば「なまはげ」。ここでは、なまはげの歴史や実際の衣装展示が見られます。
圧巻なのは、見学ルートの最後にある、各地のなまはげが集合したような展示スペース。まさに「なまはげのオールスター」といった感じです。
時間が合えば、入場料+αでなまはげの実演を見ることができます。

男鹿半島のなまはげを展示している展示館です。
事前勉強無しで行ったのですが、男鹿半島には様々ななまはげがいて、いろんな作法、伝統があると勉強になりました。隣の伝承館では実際になまはげ体験できるで合わせて行くと良いです。

Though it was close to an hour drive from Akita city, we continued to visit this museum as the local culture here in Akita is centred on namahage. Even at the JR train station, you can see traces of namahage.
When we visited, there wasn’t many people as it might be the Low season. It was late November when we visited. The museum has alot of namahage masks on display. There was a show dictating how this namahage started and there were many stories. It was intriguing to watch the video and then looking at the artefacts on display. At the end of the museum, like all tourists destination in Japan, they have a souvenir shop. One can literally buy a namahage mask home but for me, I just bought some snacks for the drive back to Akita city. Overall, it’s a very good experience understanding the local culture and I must say if you are in Akita, this should be your top itinerary.
