North Elmham Chapel (or 'Cathedral') is 1,000 years old and much under-appreciated. It's a significant half-ruin on a small but beautiful site. With free parking and free entry it's a wonderful place to explore for half an hour or so - and maybe have a picnic! Very peaceful and beautiful. (NB. No toilets)

It’s free to wonder round the ruins of this once important religious site. The info boards tell you all about the significance of the site and it’s history. Funny how history turns the tables on what’s important and what’s not.

Limited free parking right outside makes it easy access for almost everyone. The ruins of the chapel are interesting, however feel free to take a walk around the meadows (on the site of the chapel) and the woods (turn left when leaving the chapel) as the views are lovely.

A nice little visit on the whole.

Nice small ruins with free parking for approx 4-5 cars. If you come for the ruins only, you will only be here 20 mins max. 5 star review is for the meadows and millennium woods at the back of the ruins. The meadows at the back are really secure fields, three in total, decreasing in size and perfect for letting your dog off for a run. Signs on the gates says dogs on leads but spoke with several dog owners who all said that they let them off. Only thing I would say is check that the farmer is not using them for livestock before you let them off. Spent a good hour here and the dogs loved it.

Hidden away at the top of the village, this 12th Century Cathedral makes for an interesting diversion if you happen to be passing through, with parking outside of the gates.

The site has a number of signs explaining the various areas of the chapel and two viewing areas at either end on embankments, providing an oversight of the layout of the chapel. A walk around the grounds will add an extra dimension but if you like your history, you'll enjoy taking a step back in time with a visit to this historical site.

Free to visit in Saxon times this was the centre of religious life in the region. The remains are a Norman chapel converted into castle which makes it quite unique. It’s a small ruin set in larger grounds. There are a number of information boards around the site helping you to interpret what you are looking at. For photographs visit in the morning when the sun is on the ruins.

A very cold day quick wander around remains of the flint stone chapel. Some signs explaining its history. I would say 10 to 20mins stay in the cold is all you need

Blink and you will miss what is believed to be the site of the first Cathedral of East Anglia. Hidden away behind a flint wall and shrubbery on a bend in the road.
A quiet and emotive place, now populated by the wildlife that surrounds it, where once our ancestors worshiped over 1,000 years ago. Excellent information boards around the site, show how the chapel looked and functioned. We sat on the banks of the moat in warm autumnal sunshine with a flask of hot chocolate reflecting on how different our lives are today.

Without repeating other excellent reviews of this interesting and atmospheric ruined Chapel cum Castle, I'd just add that it is a credit to English Heritage. Beautifully presented and maintained with no litter or graffiti : information boards whet the appetite to learn more of the history.

We will return with our young grandaughters as they'll enjoy exploring the nooks, crannies, moat and surroundings.
