India is a fascinating land, a magical land where in every corner, you find wonderful, colorful artifacts and handicrafts. The glass-work and hand-decorated, colorful, artistic lights, beads, lamps of Ferozabad is now more than 400 years old art. Beautifully and painstakingly created, carefully nurtured right from British era, glass industry of Ferozabad (located on National Highway No-2 on Agra-Kanpur road around 50 kms from Agra) is a major export-house for Indian handicrafts.
The shop “Decent Lites” is located at the right side of NH-2 towards Kanpur (left-side of the highway if we consider towards Agra). This shop contains probably the widest varieties of local (I re-stress on this point – local, not the cheap Chinese ones) handcrafted Ferozabadi lights.
Every inch of the lamp, lamp-sheds and light-covers are covered and painstakingly decorated with colored hues and stones. The array of designs is simply amazing. Whatever they store at the groundfloor of their shop is just a tip of the iceberg. If you visit their warehouse at the first floor, its bewildering and overwhelming. And majority of warehouse stock is export-ordered.
An icing on the cake is that they sell full-fledged glass-made majestic chairs as well. Of course it comes at a majestic price also (INR 65000 per chair). Now this one is not for all.
However, the lamps, lights and chandeliers are quite affordable. Please go for the Ferozabad-made varieties. They are more colorful and carries authentic flavor. Small lamps cost all within INR 100 to INR 750. Bigger chandeliers colorfully decorated has varying costs from INR 5000/- onwards till INR 30,000/-. The more the gorgeous ones, the more is the cost. But never go for the so-called Chinese made ones as you can find China-made varieties anywhere in this planet. The Ferozabadi varieties carries that fast-dying art of painstaking crafting of colored stones, multi-colored hues and layers on the lights and lamp surfaces that makes it so special.
USP of this shop (Decent Lites) is that they stores more than 95% all locale made Ferozabadi lights and lamps. They hate to store the Chinese varieties. The other shops (which all dots both sides of highway across Ferozabad-town stretch along the highway) stores mostly Chinese varieties and calls them locale. Of course, Chinese ones cost much less (may be one-third of the locale ones as they don’t have that artistic work on it and China labor-cost may be less than India). But the exclusivity of the Ferozabadi variety is never there in the Chinese works.
The other USP of this shop is the wide variety and a well-filled stocks of items that will suite all taste. Bank-ATMs are located close-by, in the same foot of the shop, walking distance (may be 3-4 minutes by foot). If you fall short of money, you can go and take cash from there. This shop till now does not accept credit/debit cards. That’s a drawback in entire Ferozabad.
This shop does have a website which you can search from google by typing the thread “Decent Lites” in its searchbox.
If you want to deck-up your sweet home with colorful illumination, your cozy bedroom with nice colorful bedlamps, your drawing room or lobby with some majestic colorful chandeliers and side-lamps which you might have seen so long in period-dramas in TV, or maybe your lawn with some brilliant garden-lamps – then this is the place to be in, this is the shop to visit.
The only problem is: Parking of car. After the highway (NH-2) is made 6-lane, all shops including this one has gone sideways and are now accessible only through the sidelanes. So you have to leave and exit the highway, come down to the narrow sidelanes, park your car along the narrow side-lane in front of the shop. After buying, you have to again come back to the highway through the nearest entrance.
The shop-owners and staff are highly co-operative and polite, professional. You choose the lights. They will nicely pack it for you and load in your car. Nothing will break, be rest assured. They also export huge quantity worldwide. If you are from abroad, tell them so, they will make it an airworthy packing, so nothing will break in cargo.
Do note that most of these shops close around 7-7:30 pm in evening (quite early). So always prefer to visit before 6-30 pm to 7 pm.
Come, have a visit, see the bewildering variety and savor the artifacts. When you think the artistic handicrafts of India and local souvenirs, India has much more to offer other than Rajasthan and Rajsathalis. So think beyond the known horizons of Rajputana. Think of Uttar Pradesh and think of Ferozabad.
PS All the photos posted along with this piece are items purchased by me and used for my own residential decoration. Do note that I am an ordinary consumer and tourist. I am fascinated by Ferozabadi art and would be happy if this local, intricate hand-art survives the cheap export onslaught.
