One thing I want to share that , as per notice Board erected at the main entrance, opening time is 07.00 hrs and closing time is 17.00 hrs everyday. I was misguided.

its a small fort, on a little diversion between prayagraj and varanasi-in fact near to varanasi. it is said that waman, had put his foot in this place while taking his 3 steps of land from Bali. view from top is nice with ganga flowing below

I don't know what should I say about Chunar Fort, actually it was a great wondering place to me.
Can't imagine 56BC at the time of Raja Vikramaditya to Sher Shah then Humayun then Akbar then and lastly Aurangzeb to British Empire. Chunar Fort always on the hit listed of all kind of powerful foreign empires. What a great signed monument of our country who itself carrying all history with its own way.
Must visiting place for all to know about our reality to realize how we Indians repeatedly lost everything against foreign attacks.

The location of the fort is awesome; on a small hillock on the bank of Ganges. However, there is only a small area kept for public viewing. The fort has a long history spanning over many decades. Unfortunately you won't be able to get the feel as most of the area is under the control of police and not accessible to visitors.

The fort locaed on the banks of Ganga is comparatively small and mostly occupied by PAC and UP police. Only a small portion is open for tourists. As per local guides, ASI is on the process of taking over the entire fort and police will move out making it more more tourist accessible.

Due to the steep slope, the rocky fort is practically impregnable Many crude cylinders were stored in the fort area to roll them down over any army of enemy soldiers attackingthe fort. This is probably why it survived attacks over the years. Most of the enclosed fort area consists of plains overgrown with grass and a few trees. Theapproach to Chunar hill is marked by a chain of low hills, running parallel to the river on its right bank, which is covered by plantations and bungalows. The fort has witnessed glorious historical past, it rises abruptly from the plain and encroaches into the river for some distance. The southeastern part of the fort is on the rocky bank by the Ganga River, which is navigable by small boats. In ancient literature this place was also known as Charanadri and Nainagarh. While this seems to be popular with Indian visitors, foreigners seldom pass this way and those who do are unimpressed. I agree - as Indian forts go, this one is a severe disappointment.
We arrived by boat on the river en route from Mirzapur to Varanasi and decided to stop as we could see the ramparts high above the Ganges. However, we'd have had to walk a long way to gain entrance to the small part that's open to the public. It seems to be largely a police or army training camp, complete with a sports ground where trainees were playing the game with which all Indians seem obsessed - cricket.
We won't hurry back.

Travelling from Varanasi to the fort is less than an hour's drive but worth for the historical legends centred around this 1000 years old fort including a lgendary temple inside .
It was here that the British made their station when they came to annexe Benares and it was here that the queen of the last independent kingdom-of the Punjab , was imprisoned and she escaped from here to Kathmandu .
Every place is here full of stories and ghost stories too !
