Rovine. Ghiacciate o polverose rovine a seconda del periodo in cui le visitate. pochi resti, mura rifatte. Sito per addetti ai lavori. interessante è il mausoleo di Aristan Bab pochi km distante. Steppa, ghiaccio , neve, cavalli e dromedari d'inverno Paesaggi molto particolari.

We enjoyed the site at Otrar, which is still under excavation. Significant parts including the main gates are heavily renovated and there are some good signs about some of the different levels of history (16th mosque) from the settlement that re-emerged after being sacked by Genghis Khan. Nice views from the top of the site over the steppe. One issue, there’s a relatively long walk from car park- better part of a kilometer, with no shade. Take a hat, go early in the day (we went in summer) and beware of wind gusts.

Otrar was once a medieval city frequented by merchants as they travelled the Silk Road. The city now lies in ruins but archeology is slowly revealing some of the site. Restoration of the gate and immediate fortress walls is well advanced. The uncovered areas give a good flavour of the city in its heydays. Very well worth visiting if you are interested in the history of the Silk Road.

Destroyed by Genghis Khan in the 13th century, the remains of the city are a desolate and beautiful site to behold. So many buildings are in the process of being uncovered and there are scattered pieces of historical detritus everywhere. It also looks like they are doing major work on promoting it for tourists. Sadly was short on time so didn't have a chance to see everything.

Most of what there is to see here is to stimulate the imagination. An ancient thriving trading center at a crossroads of the Silk Road. Genghis Khan besieged the city in response to the killing of his ambassadors. That started his conquests to the east.

The city was at the northern edge of Tamerlane's empire and he died here.

Today a gate has been reconstructed and several areas, including Tamerlane's palace are visible due to archeology. Most of the city Is unrestored sand hills.

Note that you will be walking on very fine sand which is in the air at the slightest disturbance. Plus it can be very hot here; no shade.

Our guide drove 154 km northwest of Shymkent to this 2 square km ruins. After paying 300 Kzt each, we walked 1km over a powder sand lane to the reconstructed 14th C Shakhistan Gate which was sacked by Genghis Khan in 1219. Walking through it and climbing around the mounded site exposed foundations of a bathhouse, residences and a mosque.
Its hot, dusty, and takes a bit of imagination but if interested in seeing a large site in the early stages of excavation, its very worthwhile. And there are roaming camels.

We stopped along the way from Turkestan to Shymkent at a place called Otrar, this is a large Citadel hill near the junction of 2 old rivers that was besieged by Ghenkis Khan for 6 months before a traitor in the Citadel opened the gates for Ghenkis' army, the Citadel was sacked and the traitor received molten metal poured down his throat as reward for his treachery for betraying his own people. It was hot and windy, dusty afternoon as we went through some of the excavations and reconstructions going on there.

Otrar or Utrar is an archaeological site in Kazakhstan about 80 kilometers (1 ¼ hour by car) south of Turkestan. The area of the settlement is about 2 square kilometers. We combined it with a visit to the Aristanbab Mausoleum on our way from Turkestan to Tashkent; the distance between this Mausoleum and old Otrar is only 4 kilometers, 5 minutes by car. Old Otrar is a place with a lot of history and – although you only see some ruins – it is a ‘must see’ when you are in that part of Central Asia. It is a ‘must see’ because in Otrar two events occurred that changed the history of Cental Asia. First, it was Genghis Khan who besieged Otrar for five months in 1219 – and destroyed it - because the Sultan of Otrar had beheaded three of his ambassadors who visited this city. Secondly, it is the place where the famous Timur Lenk died. In February 1405, when Timur was visiting Otrar to gather his troops, he caught a cold and died in one of the palaces. Nowadays you only see a lot of ruins of buildings, squares, ramparts, towers and gates of this city. When we visited Otrar is October 2016 craftsmen were restoring the gate and some walls of the city. Probably in future you’ll see more and need less fantasy to imagine how this city was more than 600 years ago. We would not recommend to visit Otrar It in summer, because there is no shade at all!
