Quartier: Shinjuku

Shinjuku station is one of the busiest train stations with excellent connectivity of trains and also close to major shopping and food areas nearby. The JR East service centre is quite crowded , especially with foreign tourists but handled courteously and efficiently by the JR staff , who converse well in English too.
Station is huge with many different entrances and gates but with prominent multingual signboards allover to help the commuters.

For the train & rail travel enthusiasts Shinjuku Station is a fun place to visit. I specialize in train & rail transportation photography. There are many vantage points for creative compositions. I stayed at the Hotel Sunroute Plaza.

I arrived at Tokyo station at about 5pm - 22nd Dec 2019. From Shinkansen we were trying to get into Metro line. We tried to use the Metro tickets to get out but unfortunately it rejected so we went to the counter to ask the JR information lady. When we approached her she was busy writing something. She looked up looking agitated that someone disturbing her and answered our questions with an irritated expression. She asked - how do you get here. I said we came in using JR pass. Then she said then use it back. Not even a tinge of smile and she continued writing in her note book. JR RAILWAY doesn’t have an outlet for customers to voice their complaints as I was looking for one but couldn’t find one

We came by this place immediately on the first day of our revisiting trip to exchange for our JR Pass (and activate them too). As it's just 9.30am, the office was not crowded and we went straight to the counter upon entering the office.
While I won't say the staff were unhelpful, we needed to fill-in some forms. This was quite different from our last year's experience at Fukuoka, where the staff helped us to fill-in the forms, including the seat reservation train listing. The young male staff who attended to us, was overall efficient though look a little "stern and serious".
You can also collect many brochures, maps and guides about the city and Japan and going above, it's the coach terminal. Cafes are located next to the office too.
Do note that for JR Pass holders, besides using the Shinkansen, you can also use the pass for the Yamanote Line (subway which will bring you to places like Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Akiharaba, Ikebukoro etc, the circle line stations), which is very useful for moving around the city.
We spent around 20 mins to get our JR passes and seat reservations made (as we had done our "homework" beforehand on which Shinkansen we would be taking, the day/time/train no. and timing etc, which help to reduce the time taken).

My 15th trip to Japan, I have never encountered such unprofessional and rudeness from a JR employee ( Narita ) who works at this Travel Center. His disinterest and at times annoyance of our simple questions regarding travelling to Mt Fuiji with a JR travel pass, was just plain rude and unhelpful. When booking tickets to Kyoto for a day trip, he was very dismissive of us, not paying attention to the date we requested as he initially booked the wrong day and even then correcting him, he made no attempt to ask when we would be returning, and if we needed to book tickets.
Very disappointing service.

The Shinjuku JR station is absolutely enormous, confusing, and overwhelming. Especially if you just got off a 13-hour flight and have not had any real sleep in 24 hours. And you’re dragging your luggage around with you. And it’s the morning rush hour. Beware! You -do not- stand between Salaryman and his train!
Fortunately, there are information booths and posted maps to help you navigate this labyrinth. And if that fails just stand there with a bewildered look on your face and I assure you that some kind Japanese local will come over and offer assistance. It happened to us twice! They may not speak much English (if any) but someone will try to help you!
The JR Office here is where you want to book your seats for the bullet train wherever you plan to go. The staff here is kind and helpful but very very busy!

Hi,
We are planning to visit Tokyo next month with the primary destination is Disneyland and Alpine Route. However, we are not sure if we require to purchase full JR Pass or just purchase JR East pass. Having said that, I have search through and there is no explanation if JR East pass also cover Toyama Station (Shinkansen Kagayaki).
My itinerary as follow:
1. Day 1-2 = Disneyland(we will be taking limousine bus on the day of arrival)
2. Day 3- 5 = Tokyo (Gotemba Outlet)
3. Day 6-7 = Alpine Route from Nagano to Tayoma.
I appreciate if someone can give us a clear instruction , so we can save $$$. Thanks
Regards
Vic
