I came to Fukuoka when I first studied abroad in Japan in 2015. As part of a school field trip, we came to this shop to paint our own Hakata Doll and to learn about Fukuoka's unique culture. When I came here, I was in awe. Not only do they sell dolls, but they also sell accessories like ties, wallets, keychains, and handbags. There was one doll I liked, but I didn't like the color of the kimono she was wearing. I told myself that if she had been painted red and blue, I would have bought her in a heartbeat. I had limited room in my suitcase, so I decided to buy a smaller doll for my neighbor who's grandparents were from Fukuoka.
Never the less, I never forgot this amazing shop. In 2018 I came back to Hakata for vacation, and I stopped by this shop again. All the dolls seemed to be the same as before, but one caught my eye. The same doll I saw 3 years ago was on display, but this time she was painted in red and blue! She was about ¥9,700, and while she has a few imperfections, I think it only adds to her charm. Some dolls go for has high as ¥262,500. The more expensive the doll, the more detailed and flawless it is.
What's nice about this shop is that it's only 10-minutes away from Canal City on foot. You can stop there first and eat, shop around, and then come here. This is the place to buy more authentic Japanese souvenirs. You won't be disappointed! I promise you, you won't find other dolls like these in the rest of Japan!

We were on our way back from Nagasaki to Okayama and broke our journey in Fukuoka just to visit this shop. Somebody gave me a Hakata Ningyou years ago and I still loved the grace of movement of the dancer and his clothes that was baked into the pottery. Superb craftsmanship. After checking with Te\ripAdvisor, we found that this was the best place to appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into producing the dolls.
It was easy to find, once we headed the right way on the subway, just a couple of minutes from the station. The store itself looked a little old and dusty, but the assistant was lively and I do believe I saw her eyes twinkle when she saw how charmed we were by her wares.
We browsed at length, trying to see every angle on every doll on show, maybe four hundred altogether. Eventually, the assistant joined us, pointing out the distinctive features of each one, and the styles of the different craftsmen who made them. By now, we were even more fascinating. What a great education she gave us.
So difficult to choose which ones to buy. The grace of the clothing depicted on the dolls, many of them dancers, was something I could not begin to imagine how to capture in pottery. And the faces! Unlike some other styles of Japanese dolls, which use plastic faces, these are also part of the pottery, exquisitely detailed and charmingly human. In the end, we bought four and they each now occupy a special place in our lives.
The assistant was painstaking in wrapping each of them and then wrapping them again. She sent them by delivery service free of charge to our home address. What a delightful experience throughout.

This was a nice shop with a wide selection of Hakata Dolls. They varied from very reasonable to costly depending on your preferences. This is not a big shop but it is nicely laid out and has a nice selection. Definitely worth a stop.

We shopped at Shogetsudo during our recent visit to Fukuoka. This is probably the most well known maker of Hakata dolls. The store/showroom is located by the Naka River in the Nakasu neighborhood, between the Showa and Meiji streets. It's a very short walk from the Nakasukawabata subway station. I sort of knew about this company since I was a child, but I was totally surprised to see that they are still in business and that they actually had a retail location. The showroom has literally hundreds of Hakata Dolls of all sizes and of various price points. They also carry a good variety of Hakata Ori silk weavings. It is my understanding that this is the largest Hakta Doll store in the world. This is a highly recommended place to visit.
