We took a guided tour with 3 Amigos. It's expensive, but our guide Ivan was wonderful. IF you have a chance, spend at least a couple of days in Batopilas.

We hired Cesar Gonzalez Quintero as our tour guide in Creel for 5 days. The 1st three days were visiting the sites at the top of Copper Canyon. The last two were driving down to Batopilas and then out to Urique and Divisedero on an unpaved one lane dirt road (this is recommenced for only the most adventurist of travelers but worth it). Cesar spoke excellent English and did a good job of explaining the history of the area and showing the sites. Cesar figured out that my buddy and myself wanted to hike and would drop up off to hike and tell us where he would meet us. An excellent trip with spectacular scenery made better by an excellent guide.

2 couples spent 4 days 4-wheeling from Miramar hotel down into Batopilos overnite - then on to Chihuahua and Casas Grandes.
Beto is honest, personable, and extremely knowledgeable of the entire Copper Canyon > Chihuahua area. We did the local day trips from Creel, then to the bottom. List your ideas/interests and Beto will accommodate for your enjoyment. HIGHLY recommend!! Don't miss the hot springs

Nunca podré olvidar la magia de Batopilas, su gente, el pueblo, la barranca, los senderos, las minas. Si vas al cañón del cobre tienes que visitar Batopilas.

We decided that we didn't want to do the long drive all the way down into the valley floor of the canyon but instead take in all the stunning scenery along the way as far as La Bufa and it was really worth it. So many amazing photos and then we turned back to return to the comfort of our hotel and restaurants in Creel.

We booked our tour with Authentic Mexico Travel. Dave's team of Gustavo and our personal tour guide Noel were awesome. We experienced locations, people, culture and food we never would have experienced without Noel. Many thanks Noel, Gus and Dave and you will be highly recommended by us.

In February of 2018 I visited Batopilas, our group of 10 arrived by dirt bike from Urique, before heading to Creel. The views in and around Batopilas Canyon are amazing. For anyone who appreciates natural beauty it is a sight to see.
During our visit the town was quiet. When walking the streets you feel like you have stepped back in time. The locals were friendly and welcoming. We stayed at Juanitia's, which I highly recommend. In town and in the surrounding mountains you will encounter the Raramuri indians wearing their brightly colored traditional clothing. If you are visiting the Copper Canyon area don't miss out on visiting this town!
Regarding security, I felt safer in the canyons than I would leaving a 6th street bar in Austin Tx at 2:30am. You will see cartel activity throughout Copper Canyon. This may include teenage kids with rifles riding around town in the back of pickups. It could mean a armed checkpoint if you are traveling the backcountry at night or find yourself somewhere that you shouldn't be. Travel during the day and mind your own business and you should be fine.

We had high expectations, but the reality was scary. I've traveled to Mexico 5 times, Costa Rica, Italy, Greece, France, Japan, Korea, China (twice). Of all those travels, I never felt in imminent danger. But the drunkeness at Batopilas was scary as hell. We and all the other tourists boarded ourselves into the hotel, and stayed up all night listening to the screaming and crashing, which didn't calm down until about 3PM. I was glad to leave that hellhole on the 6 AM bus. Of all the great places to travel in the world, Batopilas would rank among the absolute bottom.

Este cañón es de los mas bellos, ademas de que se encuentra el pueblo mágico de Batopilas. La llegada a este lugar es un poco complicado (por la distancia y las carreteras ya que hay muchos deslaves) pero estando ahí vale la pena conocerlo.

Hello Greg and TripAdvisor,
I just stumbled across your message in TripAdvisor.
I wondered if you would be wiling to talk about your experience there. Anyone else who happens to see this on TripAdvisor is invited to contact me too. I have very fond memories of this trip of a lifetime.
I went to Creel and Batopilas 53 years ago in 1971. I led a group of ten Prescott College students on a college orientation. Dick Phelan, journalist and historian from Texas suggested this amazing trek. Also, he helped me get a topo map from the University of Texas. It did not disappoint. It took us over two days to get from Creel to the Batopilas bridge. We rode in the back of an open truck, the Mexican mail truck which only traversed the road every four days or so. We rode on bags of maize, mail and various goods being shipped to Batopilas and the canyon. Absolutely not for the faint of heart. No roads from there on, only burro trails. You either grew it, made it or shipped it in on burros.
I have traveled extensively, and this was the trip of a lifetime, especially when you ad the El Chepe train ride from Las Mochis on the West Coast over the Sierra Madres - one of the great train rides in the world, 89 tunnels en route to Chihuahua, some almost a mile long, etc. Shortly after I finished that trip, the El Chepe was robbed at gunpoint. I spoke with a woman who had been a victim of that scene.
I came across my journal from that trip and am writing it up. I have some gaps and a big curiosity too. I wanted to ask some questions about the area you traveled and I would LOVE to know the major differences from then and now. What has changed and how?
Looking forward to hearing from you fellow intrepid travelers. As a reward I will gladly share stories of some of my favorite journeys, if you like.
Thank you.
Warmly,
Paul Hessinger

Hi Carlos, I have a trip planed for October, I will be traveling to Copper canyon and will spend 4 days in Batopilas. I will have a local guide with me while there. After reading your review I’m having second thoughts and might reconsider my plans to visit this area in Mexico. I know there is a lot of narco activity in the area from cartels but I’ve been told they leave the tourist alone. Can you give me a little more information on what the place is like. How long was your stay and what hotel were you staying in? Were their many other tourist there while you were visiting? Were the locals friendly? I’m looking for an exciting adventure off the beaten path but this place sounds like it might be a little too dangerous. Thank you for any information you might be able to provide. Richard
