...this cannon will be fired every day on time at 9 a.m. (9 p.m.) - and this has been the case since 15 October 1898, when it was first put into operation (and has had only five interruptions since then, according to information).

From inside near-by hotel rooms, the 9 p.m. gun's report reverberates. Even though it is located on the Stanley Park periphery, that is close enough.

It sits in a cage because, once upon a time, it was removed (as a prank) in 1969 by UBC Engineers who ransomed it back for contributions to the Children's Hospital. Noble cause, at the end of the day.

There is a plethora of warnings around the gun's cage, warning lights flashing before the gun fires and a plaque warns of the loud noise. How many shattered ear drums this cannon has to its discredit is anyone's guess.

It was created in 1816 in England and has the crest of King George III on the barrel. It is still loaded daily with a black powder charge every day.

Located just south of Brockton Point, the Nine O’Clock Gun is certainly one of Stanley Park’s more unique attractions. As it overlooks Coal Harbour in its stone and steel cage, one cannot help but wonder “what is/was it used for?” The answer to both questions is complex and requires at least a moderate dive into history.

To begin with the “was,” your search can start at the cannon itself. The inscription onsite tells us that the Nine O’Clock Gun is a “naval type twelve pound muzzle-loader, cast in 1816 at Woolich, England” and features the Crest of King George III and the Earl of Mulgrave. Thus, we’re instantly made aware that the cannon is over 200 years old (!!!). To gleam more backstory on the cannon, it is perhaps necessary to review a few local histories or partake in a walking tour. Regardless of the road taken, one cannot doubt that the Nine O’Clock Gun has led a colourful existence: After a time in service, the cannon was eventually brought to Vancouver –Stanley Park – in 1894 by the Department of Marine and Fisheries (the current DFO). In its new place and role, it functioned as a symbol of time. Initially, the cannon was used to warn fishermen of the close of the nightly fishery, going off at 6PM nightly (some write-ups indicate this only happened on Sundays). Years later, after the 6PM warnings were deemed unnecessary, the cannon began firing at 9PM to aide in nautical navigation via the setting of chronometers.

The Nine O’Clock Gun has been firing at 9PM nightly, almost without interruption, for over 100 years; however, the blast is more symbolic these days. The cannon’s practical purpose has vanished into the winds of history. Now, it is much more of a Vancouver tradition and people pleaser . . . yet its story is still unfolding: Since installation, it’s survived “kidnappings” and vandalism; it’s got its own Twitter account; and, importantly, it has been used as a symbol of support early in the COVID-19 pandemic, letting off its mighty BOOM at 7PM instead of the usual 9PM (from 30 March to 31 July 2020). It is indeed “Interesting how things have changed” since 1898, to quote the previous review.

That said, I wouldn’t suggest visiting Stanley Park solely for the Nine O’Clock Gun (unless it’s really your thing); instead, I would add it to a larger Stanley Park itinerary: Walk the seawall, admire the totems, read about Brockton Point Lighthouse, see the Harry Jerome Statue, visit the Nine O’Clock Gun and explore the old Pioneers Cemetery.

Close by the totems (parking), the Lighthouse (great views), and a few other notable items you will find the Nine o'clock Gun. I enjoy this interesting bit of history, as it reminds us of the days when many people relied on church bells to tell time. The nightly BOOM at precisely 9 pm was also used by the many ships in the harbour to set their chronometers. Interesting how things have changed since this cannon was installed in 1898, just over a century ago.
Be sure to include in your journey through this part of the park.

I understand the need for the cage around it because people do stupid things, but they have it covered so much now you can't really see it. It is a shame really.

The gun is really a large cannon a 12-pound muzzleloader that fires off every night at 9 pm and has done so almost every night for a century. I read that it had even been kidnapped and it has fired upon a loating fuel barge and has it's own Twitter account!

Thanks to the installation of the cannon, sticks of dynamite were never again used to announce to ships that it was 9 o'clock and time to set their chronometers. That dynamite job was performed by the lighthouse keeper who needed to hold it or detonate it above the water. I think I'd rather hand feed alligators.

The 12-pound gun/cannon was cast in England in 1816 and bears the crests of famous people, including King George the III (remember him? American Revolution?) It is located near Deadman's Island military installation and the statue of the running man.

Surrounding the gun is a very sturdy metal and stone cage because of a theft in 2017. Engineering students from UBC made off with the cannon and held it hostage until a ransom (paid to the children's hospital) was paid. The gun is still fired (electronically) daily and is still hand-stuffed with black powder daily.

Although we've not been here in the evening, the cage is supposed to have lights inside that go off before the gun fires and back on when it is over. At nine pm, we generally are not out and about in parks that measure 1,001 acres so we haven't actually seen or heard the gun fire.
