With all the activity in this area, surprising there have been no reviews for two years. Also surprising that its been two years since I've enjoyed this area - must be Covid,
In any event, while I doubt many tourists would make a special trip to see this interesting but specialized art, it helps to think of this as a break along the vast array of sights that is South False Creek - a seawall stretching from Science World, not far away at the extreme east end of the creek, to Kitsilano and beyond. There is a large square suitable for having a snack or beverage from one of the many establishments in the area, and some great photo ops to the north.

Firstly, these pieces of three dimensional art are nowhere near the location indicated on the TripAdvisor map, but rather, in the Athlete's village area near the east end of False Creek.
They add interest to this little gathering place just off the walk/bike trail along the shore. I found this a peaceful place to sit and wonder about the need for this artificiality when there is so much natural beauty close by.

These art pieces are just great and very well done. If you're into birds you will love them and even if you aren't, you will appreciate them as an art form. They are a beautiful addition to the Olympic Village which is something to see in itself. Great place to walk and take in the city sites of Vancouver from the other side of False Creek.

Estas esculturas se ubican en la Ciudad Olímpica, imagino que representan algo relacionado. Al visitar la villa olímpica descubres estas bellas esculturas.

We were over in Olympic village to get sunset shots over the city and took a little detour off the Aquabus to see the bird statues. They were fun and quirky.

First timers here and did not expect to find such lovely artistic "birds". Suggest that everyone comes and enjoy the site or take a stroll around the area. We stopped at one of the local restaurants for an enjoyable lunch.

Gezocht, maar niet gevonden. Volgens een local is hij het slachtoffer geworden van vernieling en is hij in reparatie..

THE BIRDS is an interesting sculpture by Myfanwy McLeod, installed after the 2010 Winter Olympics in Southeast False Creek Olympic Plaza. It depicts a couple of house sparrows, male and female. Each stands at about 5-meters tall, or 50 times their actual size. The two birds appear friendly in look and style, but carry an air of menace about them. Indeed, when I first became aware of THE BIRDS in 2014 it was exactly this subtle menace that attracted me to them. For me, there was just something about two giant birds in a picaresque urban setting that could not be ignored. Granted, it took me a few years but I finally did make it out to see them. The journey was quite something – I was unaware of the distance between the Olympic Village skytrain station and the actual location of THE BIRDS. Needless to say, I got my exercise in that day!
In any event, the imagery, symbolism and meaning behind THE BIRDS is difficult to miss. The environment, sustainability and our not-too-distant history are all spoken to in this sculpture for the times. For instance, it is important to note that the sparrows depicted here are a non-native species; that is, they were introduced and are thus invasive. Recognizing this, the size of THE BIRDS gains new meaning: They are not large for the sake of being large and grandiose; rather, their size is symbolic of the unintended consequences of introducing a species to a foreign land. We may have good intentions, but these “aliens” usually tend to wreak havoc on their new ecosystem and, at the same time, challenge long term sustainability. In this regard, the size of THE BIRDS is also a little tongue-in-cheek. The sculpture highlights the “small” problem of introducing foreign species to a new land in a direct and powerful way . . . the animals themselves may be small like the sparrow, but their impact can – and often is – massive. Hence, the friendly yet menacing look of THE BIRDS.
I love the space within which THE BIRDS sit. It is a fairly mundane setting, but the sculpture upsets and unsettles the physical space and highlights the uneasy relationship between object (space) and subject (history and environment). Thus, THE BIRDS are at once fantastic (in the fairy-tale sense of that word) and yet speak a very real truth. Now, if only we had ears to truly listen . . .
With THE BIRDS, the artist has created a space through which we can reflect, if we choose, on our past and how we might look to be more careful in the future. Will we heed the message?

We didn't plan to pass here. The statues are strange, because isn't it the kind of bird you expect in a place like Canada but you can spend 2 minutes here, it enjoy your walk

A pair of giant house sparrows inspired by the Hitchcock thriller - an interesting addition to an otherwise mundane plaza.
