I spent two days with Extremely Canadian skiing at a Steep Clinic. First, I found the prices quite reasonable, especially as I by joining the clinic I benefited from a significant discount on the lift tickets. Second, going with them allowed us to bypass the long lines at the lifts and gave us lost more time on the mountain. The weather was not gear with rain and wind and that means that parts of the mountain and many of the lifts were closed, yet we still found ways to enjoy areas away from most skiers.

I recently spent four days with the Extremely Canadian (ExCan) team: a [insert head exploding emoji here] two-day steeps clinic, bookended by two amazing hops into the backcountry.
Whistler Blackcomb is a (very) big place for a newcomer to navigate alone. If you haven't been there before and want to really make the most of your time, or even if you are familiar with these mountains but want to push your limits, Extremely Canadian is the answer.
My backcountry guides, Dave on the first trip and Dan on the second, navigated us though some truly stunning scenery to the best snow I've ever skied. Along the way they shared from years of experience, giving us introductions on topics from risk management, decision-making and how to read terrain for avalanche risk (ExCan offers full avalanche safety courses as well), to gear selection, planning for backcountry travel, and how to move safely and efficiently through the mountains. These are big topics requiring further training, but I got a clearer idea of what I don't know, and where to learn more.
Sam, my coach for the two-day steeps clinic, is an affable, chilled-out guy, and quietly one of the best skiers I've ever skied with (sorry Sam, but I also got to do a lap with Darryl so...). He never mentioned it, but I found out later that Sam is the youngest CSIA Level 4 couch in the history of the program, which in hindsight made a lot of sense. He knew just how to nudge us along, progressing my group rapidly through ever more challenging runs, with a sprinkling of tips to avoid overloading us. The first day was wild, the second day was even better, and thanks to Sam's camera skills I have videos (including some epic, but painless, wipeouts) to prove it.
At the end of the clinic, my group met up with ExCan coaches and staff for live music, beer and snacks. Each of the students was given a toque with a little ExCan logo on it. Something about this was so them: it's just a hat with an understated logo, but if your coach hands you one in Merlin's at the end of a steeps clinic, I bet you'll hold on to it.
From the owners and leaders to the guides, coaches and friendly and helpful office staff, there is no attitude on this team, just the sort of quiet confidence and knowhow you only get from hundreds (and hundreds) of days on the mountain.
I came away a more confident skier with a clearer idea of how to progress both in the backcountry and inbounds. If you add the (deeply!) discounted lift ticket option to your lesson package, you get all of this (plus priceless Whistler Blackcomb ski school lift priority) for little more than the cost of a ticket at the window. If there is a true bargain to be had at Whistler, this is it.
So, thanks again to Pete, Jill, Darryl, Claudia, Jamie, the guides and team. I can't wait to come back and build on what I learned last time.

Amazing experience. The steeps clinic is a like a guided tour of the double diamond terrain of the two mountains, going down places you may not have imagined yourself skiing (or not being a good idea to go without local knowledge) combined with the right dose of coaching and guidance on ski techniques and strategy to push your limits and give you the confidence to move on. Best ski days of the trip so far. Highly recommended.

We had an amazing day doing a steeps clinic with Extremely Canadian. Our guide, Chad, was so lovely, very professional, knowledgeable, and gave us lots of helpful tips on technique, as well as showing us how to access some great skiing.
In addition we found everyone we dealt with at Extremely Canadian to be incredibly friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend them .

Completed a 2-day "Ski the Steeps" clinic with guide/instructor Steven last week. What a superb opportunity for someone like myself who is above the level of "ski lessons" but (smartly) not wanting to venture solo into single, double, or triple black territory on a mountain I'm not familiar with. The larger group was divided into smaller groups of 1-4 based on ability level during a "sorting run" on day 1. Especially given the low snowpack, poor visibility weather this week, and two deaths on the mountain reported already this year, I can't emphasize how great it was to explore the Whistler (day 1) and Blackcomb (day 2) terrain with a guide. Steven knew where the best snow and conditions on the mountain were and how to navigate lift openings for some first tracks. I felt safe and supported the entire time and can't believe how many runs we got in. I felt that I got more than the amount of instruction expected for a group endeavor. I was challenged just the right amount by the variety of runs (alpine bowls, chutes, trees, and yeah! for Spanky's Ladder). Will definitely return for this clinic in future years! Plus, it's a great value as the lift ticket is heavily discounted when paired with the clinic. Great company and a fun hosted apres event with live music at the end. Thank you Extremely Canadian!

These other reviews pretty much say it all. What an awesome experience. My form, technique and confidence on the slopes feels like it’s improved more in two days than it would have in the next 5 years of semi regular skiing and just reinforcing my bad habits. I never thought I would feel such a huge and immediate improvement.
By the end of the first day Ben had me pushing myself pretty confidently in terrain that just last week would have been so far out of my comfort zone that it wasn’t even on my radar at all. Now I can’t wait to get back in there! I had pretty high expectations for this and they were honestly shattered. I had a blast and can’t wait to practice my new skills for the rest of the season and go back for round 2 now that I know what I’m getting into.

We had a truly outstanding AST1 Avalanche training course with our guide Matheiu from Extremely Canadian. Not only did we learn essential avalanche companion rescue skills and the importance of good group decision making processes, but the class went way beyond our expectations in terms of including so much really fun backcountry ski touring in order to identify avalanche terrain features and learn to safely ski the POW! Matheiu was a truly magical guide: fun, compassionate, smart, super competent and knowledgeable and knew how to put everybody at ease. His love of playing in the mountains, his terrain knowledge to select perfect runs for group’s advanced ski ability level and the pacing of the day made for a really joyful learning experience. I would highly recommend this course and you will be extremely fortunate if you can get Matheiu for your guide.

I have skied steeps clinics at Alta, Snowbird, Aspen, Jackson, Crested Butte, Taos and elsewhere. None of these programs can compare with Extremely Canadian. The guides provide a unique approach enabling clients to feel comfortable skiing where they would never otherwise ski and more proficiently than they would otherwise ski. The atmosphere is relaxed but rigorous. I have joined them several times over the past several years and accompanied them to Niseko. Skiing with them is always the highlight of my skiing year.

Recently skied with the team at Extremely Canadian for the fourth time over several trips to Whistler over ten plus years, both the two day clinics and most recently the one day clinic. Every single time they deliver an unparalleled experience. Unbelievable coaches (Aura - you were fantastic this March, so fun!), will take you to parts of the mountain you will never find on your own, with the best snow there is anywhere on the mountain that day, confidently encourage and motivate you to ski runs you never thought you could, and give you new skills to ski them better the next time. What is most amazing to me is they have done it every time, over literally ten plus years. I hope to continue joining them when I’m lucky enough to get to Whistler until I’m too old
to ski anymore after another 30 years. No better group to ski with and nothing else like it in the world in my opinion.

The Steep and Deep 2 day clinic was excellent. I am an advanced skier but never been to whistler or BC in general so I took this program to help learn the mountain and build my skills. I was blown away by the professionalism, the quality of instruction from technique to strategy, to the quality of the fellow participants. We had a great time and learned a lot. Ash was our leader and he was amazing. I plan to do this clinic many times in the future as I believe I will keep learning and improving. Strongly recommend to any advanced skier.
