I take my bike down here often and ride the trail and come back through the farm roads; lots of parking around the park but the main parking area gets full fast. The outhouses are very clean and easily accesible. It is a great place to spend a few hours admiring the scenery, river and farmland.

Walk along the dyke, see the mountains to the east, the mighty Fraser River, the trains going over the old swing bridge, fields full of berries, or cows, go find the hidden pond (west of the bridge), if you walk far enough east you may come across a little surprise (if they are still located in the same spot) - Exotic animals which are trained and used in the film industry).

There are trails all around Abbotsford and a lot of them link up, so you can do just as much or little as you wish. The scenery is lovely and usually lots of people to say hello to.

The Matsqui Trail Regional Park is one of the nicest venues to visit in the Fraser Valley. Tucked in between Abbotsford and Mission, the park can be enjoyed by young and old for walking, running, hiking or simply enjoying nature and the Fraser River.

We went for a nice walk along the river, we went to the other side of the bridge and saw a bunch of boaters, fisherman and people with their dogs. My wife took her shoes off and walked through the river, we saw a lot of frogs running around the water. Beautiful place to relax and take in the sunset.

Matsqui Trail, especially from the Gladwin Road trailhead heading west to the Douglas Taylor parking lot is a beautiful trail to run on. Part of the trail runs alongside the Fraser River. It then enters a wooded area with great path that runs through the forest with a couple of footbridges. Most of the time the trail is very quiet and people are friendly. I've never felt uncomfortable running this trail, or having my wife run it. It's maintained (groomed even) throughout the year.

From mission bridge westward (Douglas Taylor park) or eastward (page road) is about 7km one way on either side. Lovely hike in the wintertime as trail is rather shadeless so can be rather hot in the summertime. Lovely views of the Fraser river. Due to the proximity to the Fraser river, this area is prone to flooding as such, a dyck (doubles up as the Matsqui Trail) has been built as a flood control. A few bald eagles sighted. Frazil ice seen moving seaward.

For the westward portion of the Matsqui Trail from the Mission Bridge parking lot, the trail is on First Nation reserve lands. For a small section of the trail we had to endure the smell from the Biowaste plant but for the rest of the trail after this point, which is called Olund trail was rather pleasant, along busy railway tracks... with at least 3 eastbound trains passed us by, and one westbound. Not as flat as the page road trail, but nothing significant, with small elevation gain of about 90m. It offers some shade in the hilly bits.

The setting sun lit up the snow-capped mountain ranges, e.g. mount baker, and on the north side, the mission bridge glowed in the setting sun.

Note that the gate to the parking lot under mission bridge closes at 6pm, so make sure you allow sufficient time to be back. Or park on street outside gated parking lots. Alternatively, there is parking at Douglas Taylor park or page road which are not gated.
