This is a wonderful drive, even on a rainy day! There are certainly many twists and turns and driving here isn't for the faint-hearted, however the views are certainly worth it! There are also a few stops at the side of the road where you can pull over to take some stunning photographs. I recently drove from Glenridding to Grasmere through Kirkstone Pass, however after stopping to take a photograph, I think I would have preferred going in the opposite direction from Grasmere to Glenridding, as the views of the mountains and lake behind me were simply stunning.

If you are up in the Lakes it is well worth a drive just to take in the scenery as it is stunning. The road is easily passable but it can be a bit wild up on the top !

The Kirkstone pass sits on the A 592 between Windermere and Patterdale it is regularly closed during winter.
The views are not as great as say Hardknott but it is an interesting drive and provides access for walkers to the surrounding fells.

The road between Windermere and Ullswater Lake is superb, stunning views of the Valleys from high up in the hills. Great fun to drive to with steepish, winding roads!! A motorists delight!!

Tremendous view on road between Windermere and Ullswater reminiscent of Glencoe, with steep treeless mountains either side of the pass.

Great views, easy drive, worth the visit, start the pass from Windermere rather than Ambleside, you won't be disappointed

Kirkstone Pass is the highest pass in the Lake District that is open to motor vehicles. At 776 meters above sea level and located on the road from Ambleside to Patterdale, it offers spectacular views of the Lake District. On a clear day, you will be able to see all the major Lake District fells. At the top of the Pass is the Kirkstone Pass Inn which dates back to 1496 AD. While we didn't sample its wares, there were lots of very keen people standing outside for the doors to open at 11 am. Even if you are not traveling from Ambleside to Patterdale or vice versa, it is worth making a detour to see the views from here.
