Quartier: La City

Absolutely incredible guided tour with so much history behind it. The one thing that would be nice is if one was allowed to take photos in the judge’s dining room, the courtrooms and in the cells because, respectively, nobody is eating, no one is locked up and no cases are being heard at those particular times, if necessary, the law needs to be amended to allow photography when a court is not sitting. Plus they should leave most cell doors locked shut and have a handful set to unlock (so they don’t lock when closed) and left open outside court time when no one is in custody there, so people on guided tours can safely take a look inside those specific cells while not risking being trapped in any others.

I did not go inside the Old Bailey due to time constraints, but had to admire the magnificent building with Lady Justice standing on top holding her sword and the scales of justice.

Visited the Old Bailey for the tour yesterday with friends and what a great experience it was. Our guide Jo was brilliant, she had a great knowledge of the building and its history ,we also listened with great interest to Jay who actually worked in the courts and explained a bit more regarding day to day running of the most famous court in the world.
If you are in London and can get tickets for this tour it is definitely worth going ,it was brilliant.

Recently did the guided tour and it was amazing. You find out the history of the building and the architecture of the main area is stunning. We went into a couple of the courts and also the cells & the judges dining room.
We found out so much information from the guides about the running of the courts & the history. A must do tour.

I've been to the Old Bailey a hand full of times now. As you will have probably read, it is very strict and you aren't allowed to take a number of items in with you including mobiles, smart watches, air tags, lighters, food, drink etc. There is a list of prohibited items somewhere if you google it. You can leave items at the Capable Travel Agents just down the road for a fee. It's £2 per item. If you want your mobile back for lunch, you will have to pay another £2 to give it back to them. I think there are other places but I havent personally used them. I think bags are more than £2 but not sure exactly how much. If you take a bag into the court it needs to be no larger than roughly an A4 piece of paper. Queues start forming around 9:30am. Friends and family take priority in the queue and go through first. You will go through security and be scanned. You can then head to which ever court room you want where you will wait to be taken there by the court staff. I went to see a high profile case and unfortunately there was a lot of waiting around in the stairwell. I wish I took a book or newspaper. You must spend a minimum of 30 mins in the court room when you go in. Be prepared to be hungry and thirsty however, there are cones and a jug of water in the corridor by security on a desk. They don't offer it to anyone but just ask and you can help yourself. I drink a lot of water throughout the day generally, so I really struggled not having a bottle of water with me and to keep asking for small cones of water. Also be aware that they close toilets early so around 5 mins before lunch and 5 mins before courts end so its really unhelpful if you've been in court, break for lunch or go to leave for the day and cant use the toilet before heading out.

The tour of the Central Criminal Court, the Old Bailey, was excellent, and I would most certainly recommend it to anyone considering taking the Old Bailey tour. Our excellent guide, Mr Lionel Wright, made the tour immensely interesting, he supplied us with endless information and he also provided us with many historical illustrations of the Central Criminal Court, the former Newgate prison, the different courts we visited, and the tour of the Central Court cells. It was in all an excellent experience. Those on our tour even had the honour to meet the most senior judge, the Recorder, who talked to us of his many years experience at the Old Bailey. And I have every intention of taking the same tour once again. Thank you for a really excellent and memorable tour of the Central Criminal Court Mr Lionel Wright

The Old Bailey is also known as the Central Criminal Courts. It's located in the City of London and not too far from St Paul's Cathedral and Bank.
It is quite a grand building as you would expect and located on the top of the tower is the statue of the lady holding a sword and the scales of justice.

Courts 1 (the main, original court), 2 (high-security), 3, 4, 17 & 18 are accessed via an unmarked door near the corner on Newgate St (ring the bell!) but most cases are heard in the New Building, entrance in the tunnel of Warwick Passage, off Old Bailey street.
Queues start forming soon after 09:30 (morning sessions) and 13:30 (afternoon sessions), though doors don't usually open before 10 and 2. Friends and family of those involved have priority, and it takes up to a minute per person to get through security, so best to arrive early and know what you're permitted to take in, otherwise you'll be politely turned away. (An internet search will help: this site won't allow me to give a useful, non-promotional reference, but try "what's on at the old bailey today"). Galleries usually have 3 rows of about 12 seats, but the front rows cannot currently be used, so space is limited - the earlier you arrive the more likely you'll see the court you want.
Some courts might not be sitting on time for various reasons, and visitors get no help understanding what's going on (even the ushers have limited information), so research helps, e.g. news reports.
Most cases are of murder, often harrowing, but the formality helps protect the defendants and mitigates some of the chilling detail. Meticulous analysis and regular breaks can be tiring, but watching a cross-examining barrister challenge a witness or intimidate an evasive defendant is fascinating.

The best way to visit the Old Bailey .
An absolutely fantastic tour.
If you are interested in our judicial process, at the top, then this tour now running on Saturdays is a must.
Just hope I never have to see it from another ‘ darker’ side !
Great guides and in house leaders.

This was a fascinating experience at the old Bailey
You can go into the public gallery and watch the criminal cases
You have to remain quiet
No whispering, no pointing etc
But it’s well worth every minute spent in there
There is a very strict security check before they let you in
No phones/smart watches/Bluetooth earphones/cameras/food drink or even chewing gum in your bag
We left all our bags at Liverpool Street station
£7.50 for 3 hours
£15 for 24 hours
3 hours won’t be long enough!
There are other shops etc which people have mentioned round and about the old Bailey which will save your things
BUT I read where someone’s stuff got stolen so it’s at your own risk
I cannot wait to return

Is there any available vending machines for coffee in the corridors outside court rooms?
Rédigé le 6 mars 2023
No there isn’t. It is advisable to have breakfast/lunch before you go in for the morning or afternoon session.
Rédigé le 9 janvier 2024
The courts are currently closed to the public due to Covid 19, the public gallery is limited to up to 4 members of the defendants immediate family.

Hi. A friend and I would like to take our daughters to the Old Bailey tomorrow. Did you have to book anywhere or just turn up and what times do they let you in? Thanks
Rédigé le 12 août 2019
As per the other responses: you cannot book but just turn up. The electronics ban extends to Apple Watches. You can leave these items with the real estate agent around the corner and across the road for a nominal one pound charge.

Please could someone let me know if we need to arrive at the time the court hearing is due to start or whether we can arrive later and still attend? Thanks in advance
Rédigé le 4 février 2018
They let us go in during the hearing but they told us we had to stay for half an hour before we could leave. They didn't want people walking in and out.
