We’ve visited this area over half a dozen times and always come to The Hole of Horcum for one of our hikes. There are so many walking routes to choose from - around the rim, down in the hole, out to Skelton Tower, etc. One can also include Levisham Station (for NYM Railway) and refreshments at the Horseshoe Inn. We never tire of the beautiful views and as there are so many paths we’ve never done the same route twice. Will be back!!

I used to live in this area. It’s one of the most beautiful views and close to the sea. Great to watch the NYMR stream trains in the valley.

This is an awesome inspiring hike through truly incredible natural beauty, from a high moorland walk surrounded by heather, via a delightful pub lunch and then onto a valley- hugging trek past gentle streams and babbling brooks. It made us fall for Yorkshire

Streams, animals, moors - what more could you ask?
When I first went, with my friend Simon, I was unsure of the terrain because of the name - how big was the hole? But Simon assured me it wasn't as big as the one in Oxford so we were fine.
A lovely hike - obviously dress appropriately for the weather conditions. A mistake Simon won't make again :) There are a few dog poo bags hanging on trees - certain dog owners ruin the rep of all owners which is a shame.

This is a wonderful hike that takes two to three hours and doesn't require any special fitness. Nice way to see pastures filled with animals, wet lowlands with streams, and high moors all on one hike.

Very picturesque and entirely doable for all. Just follow the main path on the right hand side after crossing the road from the Saltergate car park and have fun. Lots of sheep and the like await you. The valley itself is very nice. There are various routes around Hole Of Horcum and I would suggest researching the pathways properly. We were directed to turn right at a gate to make it back up to the HOH ridge, but we either missed it or otherwise couldn't find it.

Instead we decide to do the trek from HOH to Levisham.

Just be warned if you intend to do the trek from the Hole Of Horcum to Levisham that it's not for the faint hearted. If you have any fear of heights at all, you would be better advised to spend your time here differently. We made it all the way down to the little wooden bridge that crosses the stream which was really very pretty. It is after this that the path tends to get thin as it winds around the valley and there is sheer drop off on your left hand side in rather a lot of places. I do have a fear of heights and realised that there wasn't any reasonable way to backtrack after a certain point and no real means of escape, I kinda had to just suck it up and do it. I managed to do it in the end but if I would have known about that path I think I would have opted for a different direction or backtracked. I may be a scaredey cat but hopefully if someone has acrophobia as bad as me, this may serve to suggest finding a different route.

The pub at the end (Horseshoe Inn) was worth making it though. It was a nice place to settle down and relax after the trip. The hole of horcum and valley though was a very lovely place to hike around.

Si parcheggia(a pagamento) l'auto e si va a piedi in questa vallata. Il paesaggio è molto particolare.

Spectacular location let down by two points. The first, a minor one, a lack of bins in the car park.
The second, the major one, is dogs, or rather their owners. We walked over the road to the paths to be greeted by bags of dog waste hanging in trees at head height. Continuing on the walk there was dog waste regularly along the path. There are signs requesting people pick up due to wildlife and sheep and even if the owners are ignorant of this they should consider other walkers - particularly children.

Really grand place for a walk along Public Footpaths - chosen as a guided walk during the National Dark Skies Celebration on the North York Moors National Park website.
So wishing to attend as a threesome for this 3.5hr walk I was horrified at the advertised price. £30 Per person (meeting a friend at the car park) two cars for which there is also a Car Park Charge.

Sorry but this is not going to encourage people to to come - it is just GREED.
