The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is located at the edge of Lavenham, perhaps a 5-minute walk from the center of town. Lavenham itself is charging, but this is a particularly nice site in its own right.
The church is surprisingly large for a small town - as large as some cathedrals - but that is a result of history. At the time it was built in the 1300s and later expanded, Lavenham was an especially wealthy wool town with the financial ability to fund such an effort.
As the pictures suggest, it is an impressive structure, but it's worth walking around for a closer look. Look particularly at the gargoyles all around the nave, many of which have amusing faces. In the graveyard in the back (toward the eastern end) there is the grave of a soldier who died in the disastrous Gallipoli venture in WWII. Note the star and bear symbols all over the exterior.
Inside is also very impressive. While the church itself is about 700 years old (and likely sitting on the site of an even earlier Saxon church), the stained glass is from around 1865. On the western end (opposite the altar) there is a large window depicting the apostles. Note the one on the lower right corner of St. Peter being crucified upside down, consistent with church tradition.
The most interesting windows for us were on the right side of the eastern end (techically, the Lady) chapel. There are two large windows on top of one another depicting Jesus as . . . blond! The two scenes appear to be of Mary anointing Jesus with her hair (John 12:1-8). Judas Iscariot can be seen holding the infamous bag with 30 pieces of silver. The other appears to be Jesus blessing the children (Matthew 19:13-14).
On the opposite side (southeast - in the Branch Chapel), although it is a little hard to see behind the organ, is one of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead.
Take a look at the carved misericords in the choir.
One review on this site reported that there is no church guidebook, but that is not quite right. There is a small gift shop on the honor system on the southwest corner of the church towards the back that has a photo guidebook for £3. It also has a second guidebook describing the various windows, as well as other items you can buy. On that note, just a little further, the back (west) end of the church under the tower is now filled with a second-hand bookstore, again on the honor system.
This is a magnificent church with many interesting details. It is well worth a visit.

This is a pretty church, in an equally pretty position. The church is a short walk from the centre of the village and is worth going to see.

I live here!!! Two of my daughters got married here! All four daughters were in the church choir when they were young! It is a beautiful church. Not at all "spooky" like so many are. You can even buy second hand books here which are carefully arranged. There is a also a very small self-serve gift shop and a play area for young children. If you want to attend a church service on Sunday mornings, you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, cake and biscuits. At present there is an art exhibition.

The church is an excellent example of late perpendicular gothic architecture perched on a hill above the town of Lavenham. The carvings and paneling above I found to be of high quality. The roof on the south isle is the original. The scenes on the font were unfamiliar to me and I am curious to research the history/meaning. One example seen here are 2 musicians, a male and a female with hindquarters of animals.

Like Holy Trinity in Long Melford, the scale of St Peter & St Paul stuns: built on cathedral scale by the medieval plutocrats on the wool trade, thankfully it endures to inspire us today. I appreciated the flying of the flag of Ukraine.

St Peter & St Paul is an impressively large church for such a small town. We enjoyed seeing the various features inside, including the stained glass windows (mostly 19th century), the wooden ceiling, the ancient font and the one surviving very small brass on the floor, a memorial to a dead baby. A place of peace and calm. Well worth a visit

A lovely church which must have been very impressive before the Roundheads destroyed all the stained glass windows
