Visited in November 22. This is a small but interesting and diverse collection of mainly 20th Century artists. The story of the Merz wall and its relocation to the Hatton is Fascinating. Probably not enough to make a special trip to Newcastle worthwhile but definitely a gallery to visit if you are in the City

Have been going to Newcastle for decades but have only recently visited the Hatton (knew about it, just never got round to it)

What a brilliant little gallery. Relatively small but with enough space for four/five gallery areas which can be linked or 'isolated'. Does not have a permanent collection, rather hosts exhibitions, which can be eclectic but the common thread seems to be one which explores the juncture at which science and art meets.

As a space, it is very cleverly constructed. The main entrance is beautiful. Edwardian; tiled floor and ornate cornice. It is done in greys and whites and is very restful. To one side is a very well stocked art shop.

Use of space whilst we were there meant that access to the galleries was through the small but delightful shop (quirky). Off the shop are several rooms, none large - assume they were perhaps one at one point. Some are clearly modern in space and decoration; other retain Edwardian features. What is excellent it that the space recedes, it doesn't crowd the exhibits.

We did have some issues finding it - basically find the Newcastle Playhouse and it sits behind. There are two entrances; the side one has lift access and the gallery is fully disabled accessible. There are toilets in the gallery but no refreshments.

And it was free!

There were several exhibitions on, we were most taken by Illuminating the Self, particularly a large installation by Andrew Carnie; which in a triptych type construction reflected on the nature of self through black and white images of nerves which changed to roots and trees in winter. It was stunning, drawing on Van Eyck, Bruegel and other early Renaissance work but was also relentlessly modern. It was restful and thought provoking. My wife and I left challenged and refreshed. Well worth a visit - runs to 9th of May.

A small gallery with a difference. Well worth a visit. We were welcomed by a lady at reception who explained the layout and tips to make the experience more memorable. We particularly enjoyed the 'Illuminating The Self' presentation which was absolutely fantastic. It's a 25 minute presentation which is mesmerising. We experienced a true sense of peace and tranquillity as the lights were ever changing into images. Totally amazing.

This gallery is worth going to see just for the Schwitters' wall! Has changing exhibitions throughout the year and sells art books. Good activities for kids and has talks about art and artists which you can sign up for.

This gallery is part of the university and home to a bunch of arty types. I went to see the Roy Lichtenstein exhibition as I recognised his work. I really liked this place. access was good for my wheelchair, it is free to enter, and the staff were friendly. it is not the biggest gallery so aim to spend an hour here.
what I really loved was the building itself, I studied at Newcastle but us dental students stayed away from the bohemian, slightly scary artists, I loved mixing with the students (who weren't at all frightening), and seeing them at work was a delight and a privilege.
get yourself down here , but do it when the students are in and the old studios come to life.

The gallery website informs you of the large collection of important 20th C artworks in their ownership - however, there is no permanent display (except one installation). The galleries are filled with a range of changing exhibitions - which sometimes drawn from their own collection but sometimes don't. There is also often work from the University students on show - from undergraduates to PhDs. It is a little frustrating given the big names whose work they hold, that some space in one of the galleries isn't given over to putting this important work on show.

The one permanent piece on show is by the German artist artist Kurt Schwitter. Really atmospheric space and a rare chance to see work by this artists whose other pieces were casualties of fire and war damage.

The galleries have recently been refurbished recently with funding from the Lottery and as well as providing an excellent space to display artworks, the building is interesting in its own right.

There is no cafe in the gallery and if you feel in need of tea and cake afterwards the excellent independent tea shop - Quilliams is only a couple of minutes walk.

I visited today for the first time since the major refurbishment. The gallery is greatly improved and the permanent collection was enhanced today by temporary Francis Bacon exhibition. The Merz Barn installation still holds pride of place. I will certainly return when another show is installed.
