If you’re looking for a completely customized cycling tour, Padraic Doorey of Fresh Eire Adventures is exceptional in delivering bespoke tours in undiscovered locations.

My husband and I were intrigued by Asturias, Spain, but found no companies offering cycling tours there. So, we contacted Padraic, who researched the geography, climate, landmarks, and attractions of Asturias. He aimed to combine stunning natural beauty, cycling routes, and rich cultural experiences.

Fresh Eire Adventures undertook scouting trips to evaluate routes for difficulty, scenic value, and safety. They carefully selected routes ranging from coastal paths to countryside roads and mountain trails. The team also vetted accommodations and dining, choosing only those with high standards of hospitality and local flavor. From Michelin-starred restaurants to cozy family eateries, every meal was curated to offer a genuine taste of local cuisine. They also included cultural activities, ensuring a well-rounded experience.

Our cycling trip in Asturias immersed us in the region’s beauty and heritage, traversing landscapes from coastal views to the peaks of Picos de Europa. We visited historic towns like Ribadesella, Llanes, La Isla, Colunga, and Lastres, and explored cultural sites such as the Centro Niemeyer and Senda del Oso. We enjoyed local cuisine, including seafood, wine, cider, and regional specialties like Fabada Asturiana and Cachopo.

Accommodations ranged from seaside hotels to mountain retreats. The trip concluded in Covadonga with breathtaking views of Picos de Europa National Park, and a guided kayak trip down the river Selle back to Ribadesella.

From the initial consultation to the on-tour support, Fresh Eire Adventures ensured a seamless experience. With over 25 cycling trips across the globe and experiences with 8 different cycle touring firms, we can confidently say that Fresh Eire Adventures surpassed all our expectations in planning and executing our Asturias cycling adventure.

I've had the opportunity to go on 3 trips with Padraic and his crew now (France, Ireland, and Spain) and I can confidently say it's the best vacation money can buy. On our most recent trip we had a group with ages from 15 up to 73 with some 30-year-olds in the middle and despite this he managed to accommodate us all perfectly.

The accommodations are always immaculate and deserving of their 5 stars and they will often personally go in and check to make sure everything is perfect before you even arrive at the hotels. The dining options have always been spot on and absolutely delicious as well as showcasing the very best of the local flavors and they take care of all of the hassle of payment so it's no stress. It's always a great time hanging out at dinner and typically the local guide on your tour is extremely knowledgeable and will do an amazing job of explaining and recommending what things are and what to try.

As for the biking experience, words cannot describe. The routes they scout out for you are out of this world, absolutely breathtaking. They can accommodate any level of biker and adjust as needed even on a daily or hourly basis, you can go as hard or as easy as you would like. They do a fantastic job of making sure you are safe the entire time and know where you are going, there are always PLENTY of tasty healthy snacks available in the van too.

11/10 Can't wait for my next opportunity to go out with Fresh Eire Adventures

I've taken several bike tours with Padraic, visiting different countries and bringing a different group every time, and they just get better and better. He always includes a wonderful tour guide with experience local to the area we are visiting. Accommodations, food, drink and of course, the biking, are always perfectly suited to the group in the trip and our budget. But better than all of that is Padraic himself. He is well prepared, full of great humor, and demonstrates meticulous attention to our comfort and enjoyment. No wonder so many of his customers have become his repeat customers and long-standing friends!

Many thanks for your very kind review NancyW. It's always a hoot having you and the clan on our trips. We've been pedalling together since 2011 I think! Connemara (Ireland), Loire Valley (France), Croatia Bike & Sail, and Andalusia (Spain) in 2023. It's a pity you're missing out on our special South Africa departure in January - we'll hopefully be offering it again next November. Meanwhile, maybe I'll see you in Ireland next June? Best of luck with your surgery next week and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. #pedalon #hustleNancyhustle

We have been on a couple of trips with Padraic and Fresh Eire. As always, the customer service is exceptional, the food outstanding and the support for our biking is first class. The wine too!
Padraic has become a wonderful friend who cares for us and all his guests. Choose FEA and you will not be disappointed! I am certain of that.

I recently cycled in Puglia, Italy, for a week. I love Italy! The food, the weather, the countryside, the history, the people. My wife and I went with Fresh Eire Adventures, an outfit we’ve used a lot over the years. They use native language guides and provide late model well maintained e-Bikes, hybrids, and road bikes.

Puglia’s southern location and seacoast were an ideal backdrop for cycling. We traveled over bike trails and back roads, stayed at spectacular boutique hotels, and dined at restaurants offering Puglia specialties and superb seafood.

Our small group ensured we could go places larger groups couldn’t, and since Fresh Eire researches and scouts each trip, each season, our route meshed perfectly with stops for wine tasting, local cuisine cooking lessons, spectacular scenery and local architecture.

Bob and I have now been on 8 Fresh Eire Adventures (Connemara and the Burren- Ireland, Loire Valley, Croatia, Provence, Burgundy, Croatia, Puglia and Switzerland). We did once try a different bike tour company but were disappointed in some aspects of the trip.
With Fresh Eire Adventures you will always get the very best: local food, local wine, accommodation, and service. I love that they always have a knowledgeable local guide who adds so much to the experience. Padraic knows his routes and areas intimately. The local guides also often go the extra mile by cycling routes (shout out to Herbert) ahead of time to ensure there are no detours for the group. Often the restaurant owners and hoteliers greet Padraic like old friends and give us amazing times. Padraic’s attention to detail is meticulous. He will always make recommendations for pre and post trips and include memorable outings such as cooking lessons or important historical attractions.
It has been extra special to share some of these trips with family members.
I started my journeys on a hybrid bicycle but have now elected to cycle on an e-bike. Both have been new and quality bikes.
We have signed up for 2 more trips for 2024. We look forward to making more amazing memories as we travel on my favourite mode of transportation!

Holy moly! Thank you for your very kind review of Puglia and Switzerland - and of our trips in general. You are very generous. Thank you Louise for coming along on two trips, back to back (Puglia and Switzerland) no less, in May 2023. Thank you for recognising our efforts behind the scenes, and for recognising the extra miles our guides go to make sure your trip is memorable for all the right reasons. Guests like you and B are truly one of life's gifts; we get to spend time with you in our favourite places and share authentic memorable experiences together. We're beyond thrilled you're coming back to us in 2024 for your ninth and tenth trips! By the end of our Altentejo trip you'll both be record holders - 10 trips with Fresh Eire Adventures! I have a special treat in store for you in Malaga to thank you. #pedalon

Our biking trip to Switzerland was a perfect combination of amazing site seeing, good workout and exquisite gastronomy experience. We enjoyed every moment's of it. Every day was full of wonderful experiences. The places we stayed were superb. The guides are knowledgeable and attentive. There are no details overlooked. This was the third trip I took with Padraic and he always delivers the best.

For our 40th anniversary our family (all 10 of us) spent a magical week with Fresh Eire Adventures (Padraig and Lynn) cycling on the south and north side of Galway Bay - a bespoke tour created just for us. The scenery and weather were spectacular (though to be fair, I'm not sure that all the credit for both should go to Fresh Eire). The arrangements were also flawless - meticulous preparations and arrangements for lodgings/dining/side trips/drink and general entertainment. Our hosts on the tour were phenomenal - funny, thoughtful, gracious, solicitous, flexible - could not imagine a better time.

"The Best Way to See Ireland" - how on earth should I reply to this? Thank you for your kind review; it was our pleasure to host you and your family in the Burren and Connemara this past summer. The Best Way to See Ireland is certainly with your arse on a bike saddle. However when the rains come, it's a good idea to plant your arse on a bar stool in an authentic whiskey bar and try some top shelf Uisce Bertha and creamy Guinness.... Or sing for your supper by going fly fishing in Ballynahinch with Cyril.... Or go traipsing across the barren landscapes of The Burren trying not to twist an ankle in the limestone grykes as Shane Connelly waxes lyrical.... Or take in the breathtaking coastline or the stunning mountain views as you zip along the quiet country roads... The Best Way to See Ireland is with an open mind; to go with the flow, to immerse yourself in the cultures, enjoy the people, the food and of course the whiskey. Thank you for trusting us with your Anniversary vacation. It was a privilege for us to spend time with you and your family* and we hope to see you all again soon. #pedalon (*Audrey was our favourite) (**Audrey: send that $10 you promised)

I recently cycled in Portugal with Fresh Eire Adventures. A friend asked me for a recommendation on cycling in Europe and Fresh Eire is a no brainer; if you’re a cyclist or you just want a great way to take in a country at a less hectic pace than most other trips.
But . . . I’ve now been on 8 Fresh Eire Adventures trips and each destination is different.
Besides everyone’s own preferences of where to visit next, each trip offers different terrain and cycling challenges.
So, I’m going to review my Portugal experience and then compare it with my other trips to help you decide on where to go.
Our trip included three guests. My wife was unable to travel. The other two guests were a couple who we had met with on a previous Fresh Eire trip. Most guest are repeat customers so this wasn’t unusual. What was unusual was that this trip was in July in the middle of a drought. Fresh Eire doesn’t usually offer Portugal so far into the summer, but the other couple were constrained by their work schedules and Fresh Eire is flexible. I happily signed up to be able to cycle with friends. Fresh Eire staff, took extra precautions in view of the heat. We felt safe at all times and the SAG vehicle which accompanied us provided frequent hydration breaks. They also adjusted the schedule so that we started earlier each day and finished before the mid-afternoon heat.
The Alentejo region of Portugal features gentle hills, with farms, forests, and small towns. Orchards of Olive and Cork trees are on much of the farms. We cycled on bike paths and back roads with very little traffic. Our route included small towns, often with beautiful churches and town squares.
We stayed at unique hotels, each with full amenities . We spent several nights at Torre de Palma Wine Hotel, a property dating from the 1300s. The rooms have modern amenities, and the restaurant is Michelin rated. At sunset on our first day, we ascended the central tower of the estate and enjoyed a view of the surrounding countryside with a few glasses of wine as the sun went down.
At Hotel Marmoris in Vila Vicosa we had dinner in the wine cellar with a unique ambience. The cellar is carved into the surrounding stone. Those nights we didn’t eat at the hotel, the restaurants were within walking distance. The food was outstanding; fresh local produce and meat, plus seafood from the nearby coast. What I lost in exercise each day I put back on in the evening :-)
Since Portugal is easy to get around in, I visited the city of Porto when I arrived a few days before the start of the cycling trip. Both Lisbon and Porto are great cities, full history and cultural attractions with good pubic transportation.
I’d definitely recommend the Portugal Fresh Eire trip for anyone who enjoys beautiful countryside, history, and warm weather regardless of their prior cycling experience.
I’ll give my impression of how the Portugal trip compares to other Fresh Eire destinations, but first, there are some things that are common to all the Fresh Eire trips.
Each trip includes a guide with intimate knowledge of the route. On many of the trips the guide would cycle the next day’s route while the guests were at dinner, just to ensure there were no surprises. This was great in Switzerland, where the government was engaged in road and trail improvements along our route.
Fresh Eire Adventures features three bicycle choices: Road Bikes, Hybrids, and e-Bikes. This means folks with quite different cycling experience and stamina can cycle together. If the last time you did any serious biking was decades ago an e-bike will mean you’re not going to struggle to keep up and can enjoy the ride. You’ll get a high-end cycle no matter what you chose, but the destination you decide on should influence your choice.
Fresh Eire researches each trip, each season, in advance to ensure the route, hotels, and restaurants still meet the company’s standards. Since none of the hotels or restaurants are large chains, this ensures that they still meet the company’s criteria.
That said, which destination is best for you? You’ll need to make that decision yourself, but here are some observations that can help.
Cycling challenges
If you want hills mixed in with great scenery Croatia is your trip. You’ll be island hopping through the Adriatic Sea to cycle over island hills with sweeping views. You’ll want to use an e-bike unless you’re a serious, hard-core biker. Switzerland is also an e-bike trip for most of us (think Alps!).
Flat Routes
If you don’t like hills and just want to coast through the route, then Prague to Vienna and Holland are good choices. The Prague to Vienna trip was absolutely idyllic as the Danube is incredibly beautiful. Given that we kept close to the river the route offered more scenery than cycling challenges.
Great Food and Wine
All of the destinations deliver on this. The restaurants are carefully picked, and Fresh Eire’s managing director often has long standing relationships with the owners. I’d research the food typical of the region to see how the trips stack up in that department. The wine is also great. Fresh Eire takes great pains to find restaurants with good selections. Their managing director is a collector and will often provide guests with bottles from vineyards visited on previous trips.
I really like that all the dinners except one are covered; the last thing I want to do at the end of a long day is go searching for a good place to have dinner.
Lodging
While all hotels are what you’d expect in four- and five-star properties, there are some places that stand out.
In Andalusia guests stay at a restored former convent. The rooms have all the modern amenities, but you walk through the chapel and some amazing hallways to get to them.
In Portugal guests stay in the Torre de Palma Wine Hotel, a property dating from the 1300s. The rooms have modern amenities, and the restaurant is Michelin rated.
Croatia is unique. You’ll stay the entire week on a 102 ft yacht that will deliver you to the trail head in the morning and be waiting for you at the finish.
I hope this helps you in deciding which trip might be the best match with your preferences.

Thank you for this very detailed review of our Alentejo trip. Wow, it also explains to others what they might expect on other trips you've taken. Thank you so much. The big problem now is where will you go next (I mean after Puglia, Italy in May 2023)? Loire Valley? Costa Brava in Catalunya, Spain? We have a new Tuscany trip in the pipeline now also - launching in 2024! You are so kind to take the time to write this review. It is very thoughtful of you. Looking forward to seeing you back in the saddle next May. #pedalon - Padraic

It was an awesome week of biking and sailing in Croatia. Every minute of it was a pure joy!  Mario and the crew did a stellar job. Every spin of the pedal elevated us physically and emotionally. Absolute bliss! We didn't want it to end.

Padraic, your attention to every detail, the amount of work that goes on 24/7 with all possible twists and adjustments - INCREDIBLE! You are the best.

Last night in Dubrovnik we went to the church of Sant Maria (?) at Pila gate for a concert. Symphonic music. Wow ! Our trip ended up with a standing ovation 👏! Literally.

Thank you for making all of it possible.

Looking forward to our next adventure.
