We’ve visited Railworld a couple of times this year as our son is Thomas and train mad! After our second visit, we decided this would make the perfect location for his 2nd birthday party.
We were given a private room in the Education centre to use as we wished. We brought our own decorations, food and cake in and the room was perfect.
This is such a lovely place to explore for a couple of hours, with the outdoor garden model trains which our son loves watching, plus the indoor model railways, gardens, little Woodland trails and the main line viewing platform - there is something for everyone. All the team and volunteers here are so welcoming and friendly, they helped make our little boys birthday very special.

Can’t recommend this place enough. We’ve been going for a year or so now as my 3 year old loves the trains. A real passion project, you can see the effort that has gone into making it special. Lots of indoor activities for kids in the main building; books, colouring, train sets, educational videos, and science and nature themed fun. Lovely model railway and lovely gardens to explore right by the railway tracks. Highly recommend for the great value.

A brilliant day out with very helpful and friendly staff/volunteers who were clearly committed to the Railworld project and to providing an excellent day for all their visitors. Railworld ticks all the boxes for me an interest in Trains big and small and another commitment of mine to wildlife and Ecology. Also for those that wish a ride on the NVR this could be planned into your day for the Steam enthusiasts.
We went as a small family group and my little grandson loved every minute from the GB rail freight drivers whistling and waving to him from the signal box viewing platform across the network to the model railway which he loved so much.
A place I wish I had visited before and will now be lending my support to as a volunteer in the very near future as this is a gem within 10 -12 minutes walking distance of Peterborough City centre.
Overall and affordable, enjoyable, informative and immersive day out with insights into many ecology topics and railways.
Keep up the brilliant work everyone.

What a wonderful place. A true hidden gem. Peterborough is very lucky to have this place. Great place to bring kids of all ages. You can tell the passion that has gone into this place. Incredibly reasonably priced entry and drinks/food. Such a wonderful place for all the family. Thank you to all the volunteers

Despite living in Cambridgeshire we didn't know this place existed until last week! It is a real little 'hidden gem' run by a team of passionate volunteers who are all friendly and helpful.

There is plenty of parking but as it is hidden away in the centre of Peterborough it is a quick walk from there, and indeed the local railway station, so very easy to visit. It is also very accessible, including for those who use mobility scooters / wheelchairs or are pushing buggies.

It has lovely little walks and an eco aim, and local wildlife, which comes across throughout. There is a fab bridge across the river, and being right near the railway lots of passing trains to see. Outside also has a huge selection of railway items, a miniature railway and a replica signal box. Inside is a host of eco and railway themed displays and things for all ages to get 'hands on' with, including a massive indoor railway set up. There are lots of well designed display boards to explain more about the site, its aims and exhibits.

There is space for picnics, toilets and to buy snacks and drinks.

It is a fab little place and a total steal to visit at only £4 for adults and £2 for children, you can easily spend hours exploring and enjoying this well run volunteer attraction. If you live close enough and enjoy nature or railways you could even volunteer!

Note - I have no connection with this place but just wanted to highlight a lovely gem of a place to visit for all ages

Excellent afternoon spent here on a warm sunny bank holiday weekend. The flowers are gorgeous. We both loved the garden railway which has doubled in size since we last visit 5 years ago. There is much to look at, model train which is interactive, a fab viewing tower to watch the mail line trains too. There’s a small cafe that sells sandwiches, to
crisps, cake and chocolate as well as hot and cold drinks and lollies. We took the steam train from Wansford to Peterborough and railway world is seconds away from the platform. Well worth a visit, an inexpensive afternoon out. Thank you

Ravishing. Wonderful. Heavenly. These three adjectives accurately describe both the venue and the staff - all of whom are volunteers. I drove up from London to spend a day with my grandson and came across this delightful site courtesy of a Google search. I can't wait to return with all 10 of my grandchildren - especially as admission won't cost an arm and a leg and parking is free!

WOW!! What can we say? Ravishing. Wonderful. Heavenly? This is music to the ears of all our amazing volunteers pennandemm ... Thanks a million for the Big 5 Stars! The volunteer project started nearly 40 years ago and mere volunteers have been beavering away ever since - It has certainly been a challenge we have never had any 'core funding' but we always find ways to carry on? Hard to believe it was a derelict coal yard just 30 years ago - But volunteers had other ideas... All the Victorian Bridges were scrap! - the trees over 200 we won, (mere saplings) in a newspaper competition .. Failure wasn't an option .... We just wouldn't give up! We created this place for our native wildlife, our children and our children's children ... ? Everything we raise we plough back to make the project better .. We just want people to enjoy this amazing planet we all call 'Our Home' Pennandemm - Thank you for your time - we look forward to welcoming you and your 10 grandchildren! Wonderful .... .

We come here a fair few times in the year and the boys absolutely love it. Our boys (7 and 4) can spend hours playing in the control room, whether it's sitting and watching or controlling the mini trains they love it. The staff and volunteers are always so friendly and dedicate so much time and effort in the maintenance/upkeep of the place. The gardens are beautiful and we enjoy walking round, during holidays they often put on trails for the kids (we just won the easter hamper yum!). They have a little hut where you can purchase coffee and bacon rolls/light snacks, or you can enjoy your own picnic here too.

There's lots of educational information around, with one building in particular offering nature, science and environmental facts alongside opportunities to play with wooden train sets or utilise the colouring or writing station.

Some of the features feel like you'd only get them here, like the viewing platforms that have been built (the haven is right next to the lines from Peterborough train station so you can train spot a bit too), complete with a train tracker on the TV screen so that you can see which trains are passing through the junction and when.
It's well worth a visit, we could spend a whole day here but even if you visit for a couple of hours it's well worth the money that you pay.

Hi Bethany M - Wonderful words and wonderful supportive comments and a fabulous '5 Stars' - Just what we volunteer for Bethany M... We all want a 'Better World' - We just feel that we are 'Doing our Bit'? The site was derelict industrial land - an old coal yard when Rev Paten bought it and donated the land to the charity ..... We have been beavering away ever since .. All done on a 'Wing and a Prayer' as they used to say ? We are so please you enjoyed your day with us .. Back in 2018 we won the 'Queen's Award for Voluntary Service' after recording over 13,000 Volunteer Hours in one year! - Amazing hey? Thank you again for your time Bethany M and so pleased you enjoyed what a small group of volunteers have created in a little part of Peterborough .. You certainly made our day and your kind comments have made it all worthwhile..

I took my young family here for the afternoon. It was quite informative and the kids enjoyed it. My only gripe was it was quite outdated in terms of decor. On the whole it was a good experience.

Hi Daisy - So sorry for the delay in thanking you ... Pleased your children enjoyed what we have done - Sad that you were disappointed with the décor ... But it is all volunteer run and inspired and has been for over 35 years ... Everything we raise we plough back into the project. It is such a challenge for us volunteers to keep on top of everything? We keep hoping for a 'Fairy Godmother' .. ? The 'Railworld Wildlife Haven' was built on a derelict coal yard - purchased by our founder Rev Richard Paten with his own money and donated to the project. The 'Wildlife Haven' has taken volunteers over 30 years to create, all the ponds, waterfalls, bridges were installed - the trees were mere 300mm saplings when we planted them in 1999.. It is certainly a challenge - we have never had any 'core' funding - We have progressed using mainly discarded and redundant materials - Like the Victorian Aqueducts from the 1840's they were rescued and donated to the project back in 1990 - If we have not saved them, they would have been unceremoniously cut up for scrap! The 'World' in Globe Hall was made over a 6 year period and marked out by volunteers and driven round by a discarded car park barrier gate drive! The 'Globe Hall Earth Centre' took volunteers 19 years to build - Raising funds as we went along! Daisy - Thank you for your time, we are pleased that on the whole you had a good experience ...

One of Peterborough's first and most important industrial sites now being returned to nature by a band of enthusiastic volunteers. Some interesting old industrial relicts preserved outside, and some good railway and environmental exhibitions inside.
An interesting and inspiring visit for all ages.

Thank you Andrew for your wonderfully supportive words - Believe me they mean so much - As does the 4 Stars! We do appreciate you taking the time to comment. As you realised we are just an enthusiastic group of volunteers hopefully highlighting to people that everyone can do so much to help improve our amazing world that we all share .... ? As you highlighted the site was formally a derelict industrial site! Rev Richard Paten bought it and donated it to the charity! He was an incredibly kind man ... Some of us started volunteering over 30 years ago - It's just what you get into? .. Some like creating habitat and biodiversity, others building and looking after the model railways - It all seems to work .. We had a fabulous year in 2018 when, after recording over 13,000 Volunteers Hours we were presented with the 'Queen's Award for Voluntary Service'! Thank for your time Andrew - we all hope to see you again ..
