It’s amazing that this monument is not better known. But that also means you can visit it and reflect in peace and quiet. It’s much more than a monument to the vision of Axel Springer for the reunification of Germany, it’s about the lethal danger of approaching the wall and of climbing it. It’s only a couple of hundred metres down the road (Zimmerstrasse) where the young Peter Fechter was shot by East German border guards while trying to do exactly what the figure in the sculpture is doing - scale the wall. He died 61 years ago today, August 17th 1962. The sculpture manages to convey deep sadness and optimism at the same time - no mean feat. Go there and walk through, touch the wall and sit and think for a bit.

The Balanceakt (Balancing Act) Sculpture is an interesting monument you can see along Lindenstrasse, which pays tribute to Axel Springer and his long hopes for a reunified Germany during the Cold War period.
Sculpted by Stephen Balkenhol in 2009, you will see a 3.5 metre tall figure of Springer upon a concrete wall structure, symbolising a man standing upon the wall instead of being bound and restricted by it. It is a touching tribute and a neat perspective offered by Balkenhol.
Interestingly, there are eleven old sections of the Berlin Wall scattered around the Balancing Act sculpture. These add appropriate context to the sculpture and are nice to see if you are interested in Berlin's Cold War history.
