This is one of the most beautiful chute have ever seen. And I have seen many. The beauty of the art is marvelous. I had to come twice to explore more. Literally it’s breathtaking.

It was the first episcopal seat in Germany and certainly one of the most interesting monumental works in the city of Trier.

The Church of our Lady and Cathedral in Trier (the oldest town in Germany situated on the picturesque Mosel River) is a Unesco World Heritage Church (1986). It was the brainchild of many French Gothic master builders in the 13th century. The Church itself, it was found during archaeological excavations, actually sits on the old Moselle riverbank dating to the Stone Age and the foundations are of the Roman south basilica. The work was begun in 1227 by Gothic architects from the Champagne and the Ile de France. It replaced the Ottoman Marian church which was destroyed by fire during the Viking invasion at Easter 882.
The Church was left in ruins by bombing during l944 but was structurally stablized and repaired between l946 and l951. Much of the repair work retains the French influence.
There is a “window of history” where the remains of a built-over Roman Street from the 3rd century can be seen, as well as the flooring of the predecessor church. The 12 Apostle portraits (1404-1508) are Dutch panel paintings on stone – with restoration works, these now radiate their warm late Gothic colors.
There is so much history covering so much time that this place is a must visit if visiting the Mosel. Allow several hours to just absorb! It is a working Church so no visitors allowed during worship. We just wandered in and whilst no entry fee, donations are welcome. Organized Tours can be arranged in advance on Saturdays at 10:30am between April and October.
