It is located in Piazza Delle Cinque Scole, in the Regola district, not far from the Roman synagogue.
In 1453 the Cenci family, who had been in Rome for about a century, obtained the patronage of the Chapel of the Madonna della Sbarra in the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, starting to link their name to the worship place.
In 1575 the church was restored by Francesco Cenci, whose family owned the nearby building,Palazzo Cenci, and the church became this way the Cenci family’s private chapel.
with the same appearance that it has today.
It still has the same façade on the central square of Monte de’ Cenci, which still maintains the characteristics of a private square within the large compound of the Cenci family.
The façade has two portals surmounted by two rose windows and divided by an inscription in marble
The commemorative plate reminds the visitors how the church's decoration work was completed in 1575.
The interior of the church also dates back to the 16th century, and has been marginally altered by several successive interventions and by a restoration in 1881.
It has a rectangular plan, with a single nave , with a cross vault with the Cenci coat of arms in the center, with lateral chapels.
On the main altar there is an altarpiece dating back to 1612, by Giuseppe Vermiglio, depicting "The Incredulity of St. Thomas", 1612.
Noteworthy are the "Stories of the Virgin" by Sermoneta (1585) in the first chapel on the left.
Incorporated in the structure of Palazzo Cenci, few meters from the Lungotevere of Rome, the church of St. Thomas ai Cenci was once known as the “Church of San Tommaso Fraternitatis".
In case you are around, and the church is openn get inside to admire the beautiful altarpiece and the frescoes "Stories of the Our Lady of Sbarra", featuring her parents, SS Joachim and Anne.
