Due to some changes in our travel scheduled that required us to stay near Reyjavik longer than we expected, we had the opportunity to visit the home of the President of Iceland. We were impressed by the ideal setting along the coast and enjoyed the ride there. We visited in the morning and were the only tourists visiting. Even though it was windy, we took very scenic photographs of the church and ceremonial buildings. Only a chain and sign indicated the boundary for tourists. At the time we visited, there was only one police car parked at the home. It is a beautiful serene setting that reminded us of how a civilized world should operate. We spent about 30 minutes here before departing. Since this is an easy stop in or out of Reykjavik, it is well worth a 45-minute stop.

The most amazing thing about this? You can get extremely close to the President’s home! I saw someone working on the landscaping but if there was security it was not obvious. If you are in the area, and have some extra time, stop by; I wouldn’t make a special trip.

Bessastadir House is the official residence of the President of Iceland. The house sits on a peninsula that was first settled in 1000. The house and grounds were donated to the Iceland government in 1941, first for the regent and later for the President. There was a small church and cemetery in front of the house. You can only see it from afar.

Bessastaðir is an old farm on the outskirt of Reykjavik. It is nice but not really that interesting other than the president of Iceland lives there. You are free to walk around most of it. It is more of an optional stop than a real destination.

This building was a historically a church, in front of the buildings which serves as the residence of the President of Iceland. I was told it was the earliest stone building in Iceland built in the 1700th. There are no visible guards present but am sure they are around the residence where we were not permitted to visit. What puzzles me is why the earlier settlers from Norway did not bring over iron tools to cut stones to Iceland. Stone working in southern Europe did not make it to Iceland until 1700th?

Can't actually get in but you can walk around the grounds and visit the church on the grounds. We've been inside for a Christmas Party for the children of diplomats. Very pretty. What is hard to believe is that there is so little security. Icelanders rightly believe it is unnecessary.

This is a well maintained house/meeting hal that was the place of the Reagan/Gorbachov nuclear weapons treaty agreement. You can't go in but plaques tell what happened here.

We did not take the paid tour, and instead wandered around outdoors and visited the church next door to the President's residence. That church has some interesting stained glass windows. The setting, far from the heart of downtown, is quite nice and offers great views.

The location of the meeting with President Reagan and Soviet Premier Gorbachev was at Hofdi House in Reykjavik not this house.
