This little gem of Austria is magical. The hike is not for the faint of heart - definitely take water - but the ruins and the astounding views are absolutely worth it.
From Wikipedia: Dürnstein Castle is the ruin of a medieval rock castle in Austria. It is located in Dürnstein, in the Lower Austrian Wachau region on the Danube river, at 312 metres above sea level.

So much more interesting to see the old castles in their natural state -- even if falling down -- rather than something that has been restored to look old. The Durnstein Castle is a nice bunch of crumbling structures overlooking the Danube.

An interesting little place, definitely geared to the tourist I did not climb up to the castle because I use a cane.

Historic but not much else. There are other lookouts with better views of the Danube. The path is very steep and not well maintained.

As you will have read, the climb is steep and the terrain uneven. It is at least half stone steps, and at the very top, you will need to use your hands to climb. It is very doable but on a hot day (it was 31 when we did it) it was challenging. I’d say between moderate to hard but mainly because of the heat.
It took about 20 minutes. There is a faster way (15 min) down through woods, on a path but it has no views.

The town of Durnstein is very charming. You can walk up to the castle ruins, but just walking around the town is great on its own. There are lots of small shops. The big thing in Durnstein is rabbitshit - chocolate disks with apricot filling. There are lots of apricot products in this area.

We loved Durnstein, its quaint streets and shops were very welcoming.
We tried to walk up to the ruined castle and did get up to quite a height which afforded great views of the Danube and surrounding countryside, however we found the path challenging and eventually called it quits and made our way down without seeing the Castle.
Overall the town and area in general was beautiful

It is a very steep and rocky climb up to the top and the castle itself is a ruin but the views of the town and river from the top are amazing. Definitely worth coming here for the views alone

Seeing the architecture and the gardens was fabulous. The people were very friendly. We got to talk to a man who raises apricots and sells his apricot products at a roadside stand. I was amazed at the tunnels that allow modern transportation without spoiling the view of this centuries old town.

It did not seem that high when viewed from the road, but appearances are deceptive. The steep climb was a bit more than some go us in the group had bargained for. The lure of seeing an actual place that was part of Richard the Lionheart was what drew us to this place. Situated right on the Danube, the path leads through a small village with a cobblestoned street and then up the hill. The path is narrow and is a mixed trek of stair steps and rocky foot ledges. The view from the top was beautiful and worth the climb. Need to take water or food with you since there is nothing available on the route above the village and nor on the top itself. Information laid out on the top laid bare the myth of Robin Hood; seems that all outlaws during that time were called Robins of the Hood! The castle itself is just a ruin now and has not been rebuilt since it was destroyed by shelling of the Swedish armies in the 30 years war in the 1600s.
