A wee day trip up the East Coast from Dundee on a glorious Sunday where we chanced upon this little gem in Gourdon, an east coast village for ever long associated with fishing.

The Maggie Law was a lifeboat, built in 1890 and rowed by six men and funded by local fisherman to saves the lives of their own. The centrepiece of the the museum is the boat itself, but the gallery upstairs is a treasure trove of local stories, characters, and connections to the Titanic and others. The website too, has a great collections of information and multi-media exhibits. We will be back.

Admission free, but donations welcome as, like the lifeboat, it survives on the hard work of local people.

Situated in the old coastguard building, the Maggie Law crams a lot in for its small size. The downstairs houses the Maggie Law itself, a 19th century inshore lifeboat which was rowed by 6 men. There are also numerous models, photos and artefacts related to the maritime industry. The upstairs, accessible only by an outside staircase is the office/research centre with information boards and audio visual equipment, including some voice recordings of local fisherman recounting their adventurous past. Although the museum is small, you will be given a big welcome by the volunteers who run it. They have a wealth of stories to tell including the history of the Maggie Law, local connections to the Titantic and the Cutty Sark, and the tale of local fisherman being taken prisoner by a German U Boat crew. There’s quite a bit to see and the volunteers really make the museum come to life. Be prepared to stay longer than you thought! Admission is free, but donations are gratefully received.

Lovely small museum that used to be the lifeboat shed. The Maggie is in the shed surrounded by memorabilia from the ages and about local lives at sea. Not much space to move around and lots of reading to do with the old paperwork etc so not ideal for really young children. It's free entry and run by volunteers.

As previous reviewers have mentioned, you need to check on the opening times of this splendid little museum before setting off, and I can advise that it is now closed until Spring 2019. The museum is situated in the old Coastguard station and the centrepiece is the splendid old inshore lifeboat, the Maggie Law.

Even when the museum is closed, Gourdon is worth a visit to see the Gutty harbour, which is one of the few remaining working harbours on this part of the coast. There is also a rather smart looking fish restaurant and a decent local pub.

Looks small on the outside but it has a very good display. Great view of the sea too. The volunteers who run the museum are very friendly and informative. Kids had a great time as the volunteers really took the time to talk to them and answer the questions of the little ones.

Tells the story of its community - the fishing village of Gourdon. Run by friendly volunteers. On two floors, the upper one with a view out to sea. Free, but donations welcome. Even have an audio guide you can use. Check opening times before you set off.

Stopped off at Gourdon with my wife last Saturday during our coastal drive north.
Visited the Maggie Law Maritime Museum where we were immediately greeted by a very enthusiastic volunteer, who immediately went on to explain about the museum.
There are various audio tracks about different exhibits which one can listen to if desired.
There is so much of interest on the maritime theme crammed into such a small space that we had to look around twice to make sure that we saw everything, and still probably missed something!
We then ventured upstairs (accessed from the outside of the building) to have a look. Here there is access to computers, more exhibits, and a quantity of reading material.
This turned out to be a really interesting visit for us, with much more to see than what we imagined.
Admission is free. There is a donations box, and we were happy to make a donation.
For those intending to make a visit, please note that their opening days do vary according to the season. Normal opening times are generally 1pm to 4.30pm. Would recommend checking with their website, or telephoning first if travelling a long distance.
