Charming Church which has so many community activities. Lovely little shop at the back and I adored the Belfry tower in the yard. Sells plants during the day and is still in use as a bell tower. We were there for the opening launch of the village Community Pub and Restaurant, the Bell. I must say the village is beautiful as we took a walk around it all. A little treasure so pretty.

The bell tower at Yarpole is dated to around 1185 and is therefore one of the oldest intact wooden frame buildings in the U.K. Not as large as the one at Pembridge, it is older and similarly impressive. One of the seven churches in Hereford with a separate bell tower.
Of clear historical importance. The door of the bell tower alone makes a visit a must - see it from the inside to be stunned.

From the outside it looks like a normal church ....yet...it has rescued the community. It can still be used for worship, but the back is a shop cum post office and the upstairs a cafe. It's smart and tidy and well thought out .......so support it. It's worth a visit just to see what they have achieved ...fantastic.

This is the first church to contain a Post Office, Shop and tea rooms.
Its just a pity that the opening of the tea room contributed to the closing of the local public house

I drove into Yarpole on Monday after finding Croft Castle closed due to the ice on the drive. I intended to just buy some sandwiches for lunch and was amazed to find that church also had a coffee area and a shop. I was able to take Marley (my dog) into the church and had a delicious slice of apricot and marzipan cake and a cup of coffee. The people were very friendly and when I called in again on Wednesday on my way to Croft Castle, Marley started to bark while I was upstairs ordering my coffee, and one of the parishoners made a fuss of him until I was able to get back to him. It was quite busy and the table downstairs was full, so I sat on one of the church chairs, and the cafe waitresses brought out a card table covered with a tablelcoth for my coffee and cake. I can thoroughly recommend this cafe to anyone who is passing in the morning. They also do light lunches on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Yarpole's 14th century church is famed for its external bell-tower, dating from the 12th century. That alone would be worth a short visit, as there are good, informative displays and an on-demand audio guide for visitors. However, the real trick is to visit the church before noon. You can then see what can be done to rejuvenate a dying village church by incorporating the local post office and shop within it. Add a mezzanine level for cafe facilities and a meeting room and suddenly the dying church used by a handful of people once a week becomes, once more, the core facility of the village. Yet it's still a place of worship too. It's an inspirational place whether you have any religious leanings or not. The bacon butties on a Saturday morning (10-12) are especially recommended!
