Quartier: Central Business District

Stunning building made all the much better with the lovely large Christmas tree. Was very quiet to walk around just before lunch but seemed much busier when we walked past later in the day.

In the 1890s, banking chambers were temples of commerce. The banks wanted their depositors to be awe-struck, and utterly convinced that their precious savings were in safe hands. This extravagant banking chamber was occupied by the Commercial Bank of Australia (CBA). The magnificent Baroque dome dates from 1891-1893. Apart from the gilt columns, the marble inlaid flooring hardly bares walking on. The facade is Chicago style. The sensitive re-building of 333 Collins Street has resulted in a commercially viable office building that retains the heritage values of 333 Collins Street.

This is a magnificent historical building. I just popped into the foyer to take some photos but found the security staff really helpful and accommodating. Only open during business hours in the week but well worth a visit if you can make time.

This foyer could be in any stately building in Europe or Dubai. Melbourne has quite an enchanting building that should feel lucky it has been refurbished.

A lovely building, with many old features kept. Some parts, eg the Collins Street entrance, make you want to gasp with disbelief.

Collins Street was, for many years, the pre-eminent address for Australia's dominant corporations. Number 333 Collins Street was the glorious banking chamber of the Commercial Bank of Australia (CBA), intended to display its wealth and stability. You can, in normal times, see its ornate ground floor with comortable Chesterfields for clients. You can also view the magnificent dome. The building is said to be the best serviced office complex in Melbourne.

For anyone (resident or visitor) walking along Collins Street in the city, here is a delightful walk-thru in the heart of the city, that many don’t know about.
Until a magnificent refurbishment in recent times, 333 Collins St was the longtime head branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia and constructed in the 1890s. After merging into Westpac the bank continued to operate as Bank of Melbourne before going through a refurbishment.
The main banking chamber is now a grand foyer off Collins Street, with a stunning dome and long corridor that takes you through to Flinders Lane.
Visitors can enter during standard business hours and take in the architectural beauty and ambiance of a building that was almost demolished in the 1970s.
Best of all, it’s free! And the space and lighting is a photographer’s delight.

Built as a banking hall by the Commercial Bank of Australia, it's now an entrance foyer of a large modern office block.
On 1 October 1866 the Commercial Bank of Australia Limited commenced business. Then known as No.30 Collins Street West and renumbered 337 in 1889, this address remained the site of the Bank's principal office in the heart of Melbourne's financial district during its whole 116 year existence, except for the period of rebuilding during the 1890s. The first General Manager of the company was George Vallentine who had been recruited from the Bank of Victoria. The building remained substantially unaltered until 1939 when the Collins Street facade was demolished and reconstructed to a new design.
The first storey consists of semi-circular arches in the Roman form surrounded by a storey of applied temple fronts of the richest decoration. The floor of the Chamber is a detailed mosaic. The 1893 entry is constructed of stone with large iron gates and a central barrel vaulted ceiling.
This building is opulent ... the stunning facade only invites you to discover that it's beautiful inside and and out.
