The staff and volunteers were so welcoming, warm, and helpful. My son thoroughly enjoyed exploring and the doting attention the staff gave him too.
We grabbed some milkshakes and toasted sandwiches at the cafe. They were delicious and really reasonably priced too. We recommend!

We visited during one of DownsSteam's Super Saturdays (third Saturday of every month). We went on one of the tours, provided by a volunteer - who was very knowledgeable and passionate about everything on site. The Dreamtime carriage is certainly one of a kind - just beautiful. We also had a ride in one of the Heritage buses that are then only for the Super Saturdays - taking about a ride down memory lane. We had some of the "famous" scones, which were delicious. Recommend a visit - no matter what your age.

We visited here this afternoon parking on the grass in front. The flowers are pretty, the train cars are well posted and the guide is handy for explanations. I liked the Shed to see the beautifly maintained locomotives.

We discovered this while staying in Toowoomba a few nights. There is a fantastic native art display in one of the carriages. Totally worth it!! Loved it 😍

Go just to see the Dream train artwork at least and the guide was excellent at explaining aboriginal story. The 106 locomotive is a great work in progress. Keep up the great work great to meet the passionate volunteers.

Our family arrived in the morning, about opening time and were lucky to join one of the tours. The guide was very knowledgeable and passionate as he took us along the railway line and into their work shed to demonstrate and discuss the various trains and works in project being restored. There are several vintage train carriages able to be boarded and walked through. There is a working steam engine which moves about- noisy but impressive. There is a cute relocated station which houses the souvenir store and toilets. Another stationary carriage is filled with memorabilia and other collectibles from recent to more distant past. We also joined a tour through the Dream painting carriage to see all the wonderful indigenous artwork inside and hear it explained. Finally there is a restaurant train car which is restored beautifully inside and the scones with jam and cream were wonderful. Just make sure you check the can of drink is cold when they hand it to you- they might have just refilled the fridge. The entry is only $5 per person which goes towards all the good work the museum is doing. We spent a very happy two hours+ inside and some nice garden areas as well.

Amazing train museum, where they are actually renovating the trains and let the public roam freely on the display carriages.
Wonderful staff and free guides who are very knowledgeable, really takes you back to the age of steam and the ‘station’ is full of yesteryear charm.
You can catch the bus out from Toowoomba very cheaply and it’s $5 donation to enter.

This railway museum was so inspiring. We were given a magnificent tour by Ian who took us through explaining each of the exhibits. He explained how a steam engine works and we even got to see the inside of the boiler.
The volunteers there were so friendly and helpful.
The dream carriage was completely awe inspiring. Seeing an indigenous exhibit painted into a carriage with no fanfare other than what it is an incredible piece of art was superb.
Thoroughly recommend, would have given it more stars if I could.

Hello Bette,
There is no problem having a guide. One of the volunteers usually takes visitors on a tour. Also, the museum is a donation rather than a charge. However, there is not a cafe there, but the office there sells drinks and treats.
