Nice to grab a lane at short notice on a Saturday night. Loads of bright lights makes it feel like the 1980s.

Not too bad but they made us wear those ridiculous old fashioned shoes. Retro music saved the day. ..

The teens decided to have a joined birthday party and wanted to go bowling. Despite my guests turning up at different times and making it as awkward as possible for the hostess and manager, the staff at Sunset ensured everything ran smoothly. The offspring had an unforgettable party and the mother had time to catch up with the other adults (some even took to a bit of bowling!)

Now let's have some background here ... I haven't been ten-pin bowling for a quarter of a century. But let me tell you ... it's changed - for the better!!

A school friend of our 9 year old recently had a birthday treat which included having a handful of good buddies out for a game of bowling at the above venue. I didn't even know it existed!! Glad I found out!

Anyway the boys had such fun that I thought it would be a nice idea to take our own family of five, including 3 kiddies aged 12, 9 and 7 to the alley so the others could have a go ...

Had a look at their website and discovered that they have a "cheap" night each Sunday .... book a lane for an hour after 7.30PM for twenty five bucks - including shoes - and as few or as many as you like can play.

I had avoided family excursions to the alley in the past because even when I used to do it many years ago I recalled the pricing being a bit steep, but this seemed excellent value for a family evening.

Anyway we had our second visit there Sunday just gone, so I think I can reliably report on the place.

Right ... as I said before ... bowling has CHANGED!! Firstly you can programme the little computer console that controls the lane to have the lane "bumpers" up for whomever in the group you like ... then when it's their turn the little rails automatically pop up which prevents the ball from going into either gutter. You can also customise the display from a few different snazzy defaults ... our mob chose the fairy tale display; and this resulted in lots of dragons, wizards etc dramatically declaring the scores on the TV display above the lane. G R O O V Y!!!

Then the display shows exactly which pins remain, with even a suggested tactic to get them.

At the end of each game, the display asks if you want another one, and it automatically presents the new game if you proceed. The console a little getting used to ... but what fun!!

The balls .... well when I last bowled you had an amazing choice of balls from which to choose - all in a dazzling array of black and/or black!! Not any more .... there were pinks/purples/greens/blues right down to a brown with red stripe!! Some in sparkly, metallic type tones. WOW!

The other major change is the shoes!! This mob actually seem to care about theirs. All shoes we were presented with were in pristine condition ... and didn't stink!!

The service exceedingly obliging, cheery and friendly on both occasions. A couple of the kiddies balls landed quite heavily, but there were no dirty looks from the staff .... everybody was left alone to have as much fun as they could.

On both nights our mob of five got a full game and most of a second in ... certainly enough to declare a winner before our time ran out.

And speaking of time, it seems generous as well. We discovered on our second trip that the default setting appeared to be an hour and 3 minutes ... and this doesn't seem to start until you bowl the first ball. So no need to hustle the kids to hurry up and choose their balls like we did the first time! The timer then counts down so you can bowl with urgency as it approaches zero.

They also have little launching ramps for the youngsters, so in reality there is no lower age limit - any child could simply have a hand in on the bowl and push the ball after mum or dad aims up with the launcher for them.

In all we are very fortunate to have discovered this place by chance, and it is very certain that we will be enjoying the odd Sunday evening there.
