Magnificent location and historic buildings.
déc. 2021
This historic precinct around 30-minutes drive out from Kempsey is well worth a visit to learn a little about the local history and to see the amazing scenery along the coast. The goal itself is still standing (built in 1886) but nowadays empty. It did hold criminals originally and then internees during various early wars. Now kangaroos graze amongst the old cell blocks and the whole area overlooks beautiful beaches and headlands. There is a camping area adjacent the complex run by the National Parks. A modest entry fee applies and there is a nice collection of colonial items from the gaol over the years in the on-site museum. The whole area is very photogenic especially on a nice sunny day. Allow around 60-90 minutes to explore the site.

So quiet
juill. 2021
We almost had the place to ourselves.
Nice to read of the history of Trial Bay and to watch the short video.
Masks and check in were mandatory (but of course, not a problem).

Great location with great views back to South West Rocks . Good camp site just outside in peaceful locations and lots of kangaroos about added to the scene .

Definitely worth the drive.

Extremely interesting look into Australia's past, particularly the treatment of "enemy" foreigners during World War II. There is a video but the gaol itself is worth exploring with the information boards telling the stories from the past in each building. Also get the chance to be up close to kangaroos who just think it's a good place to rest-awhile.

Sandstone Goal From 1866
mai 2021
Built by convicts with local sandstone and starting in 1853, it housed convicts from 1866 to 1903 and again in WW1 where German marines, Australia born Germans and Austrians were housed. It is large and interesting and located on a beautiful part of the coast. It is now a museum.Worth a look but also spend time along the coast below the prison for great scenery.

Good lesson in modern Australian history
mai 2021
Trial Bay Gaol enjoys a magnificent headland site with commanding coastal views. The complex itself is also commanding as a stand-out piece of architecture, partially restored from the times when it was operational. Despite being such an impressive sight, the gaol was really something of a folly, with huge blow-outs during construction and then never really being 'fit for purpose'. Perhaps its most significant period was during WWI, when it served as an internment centre for German nationals. The story of this time is very well told at the gaol; the ingenuity and enterprise of the interned Germans makes a great story and also shows up the folly of the internment.

Wonderful History
mai 2021 • En couple
A wonderful site to visit. Ruins have been pretty well stripped over the years, but some good recent renovations have kept it alive and well worth a visit.

A Little bit of history
mars 2021 • Entre amis
If you come to South West Rocks you must visit the historical sites such as this one

The gaol is still standing...of course not as it did a hundred years ago

The information in regards to the history of TBG is very informative. It does not just cover the history of the prisoners and their trial and tribulations but also the time the prison became an interment camp for German immigrants during the war

Would highly recommend it

Great location
févr. 2021 • En couple
The location is great but unfortunately we had a bad experience with the weather once again. Wild winds and torrential rain. The bay side sites are very exposed to the elements. Might be better to choose a site down further in the hollows. The bathrooms were not kept as clean as I remember from before and we had over 24 hours with no soap in ladies bathroom.
