Quaint museum collection of all sorts local history. Friendly staff will help you walk through time. Palazzo is restored and holds exhibits in rooms set around a shady courtyard.

So funny to see this show up on TripAdvisor. My dad raised us in Florida having escaped the Castro regime and basically my entire childhood was spent hearing stories about my great-great grandfather, El Manco Rondán and all the crazy stuff he did as a Spanish gentleman (read: buccaneer 😂) in Cuba when he built this place and used it to repel mambíses during the Revolution. His kids (my great-grandfather and uncle) went on to become the first governor and senator of Oriente province of the new Cuban republic.
As adults my siblings and I visited La Periquera to learn about it and demystify the romanticized version our dad always spoke of this place. And then we got sucked in too! It’s a beautiful and formidable structure, and the museum and records department has pictures that paint a picture of the more genteel times of the 30’s and 40’s in Cuba. And then there are the legends if you’re into that.
If you’re in Holguín, it’s worth checking out! ✌️

This is a sweet little museum that gives an introduction to historical Cuban life. The building was once the home of a Spanish military family colonized in Holguin. The Spanish army wore bright uniforms and the locals thought they looked like colourful parrots. Hence the name "La Periquera", which means the parrot house.
The museum has a new installation on the life of Fidel Castro, which gives insight on his importance to the country. There is a display of agricultural tools, a musical instrument display, one of the first cars in Holguin and a cave in the back courtyard that is interesting to see. Some of the displays are not well protected, so they would not be suitable for active children to visit. I would definitely NOT go into the music room with an impulsive child.
The museum does not have English translations on the signs, but an interpreter is available to give a tour of the house. It is an enjoyable way to spend an hour or two. Entrance is by donation. There are one low step to get into the building and one more in the hallway, but once past those steps, the museum is accessible to wheelchairs.

Enjoyed walking through this bit of Holguin history. Small fee to enter and extra charge if you want to take photos. A very nice employee approached us about halfway through and she gave a walking tour, we did give her a tip for her wonderful conversation and guide. Yes, it is small but filled with lots of historical articles and information. Worth the time to see the exhibition and the historical colonial building where it's housed.

Centrally located in Holguin centre, the museum includes a varied collection of artefacts from the history of the city and surrounding area. All information is in Spanish, but do not let that deter a visitor. An extensive display in the foyer featured former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who was born not far from Holguin in 1926.
