Life Magazine called it the lonelinest road in America in 1986.
I disagree!
Traveling through Hwy 50 was one of the best and fun road trip experiences full of variety.
A. How many roads in the US consist of the following?
* A state Capital - Carson City
* Pony Express Stations and Official Route - which was once the most sophisticated express mail system in the US
* Major train routes: Ely and Carson City
* Mining towns: Ely and Virginia City near Hwy 50
* Casinos in Ely and Carson City
* Saloons along Hwy 50 in cities such as Eureka
* Is on the Lincoln Highway
* Museums: Northern Nevada Railroad Museum, McGill Drug Museum, etc.
* Rich in history
* Sand Dunes in Sands Mountains
* Archaeological sites and ruins: Sand Mountains Pony Express Station, Middlegate Station, Rock Creek Stations (near Middlegate Station), Grimes Points (Petroglyphs), Petroglyphs in Hickson archaeological site, Baker's archaeological site
* Farms and ranches in Fernley, Fallon
* An opera house in Eureka
* A court house in Eureka
* Military bases (Fort Churchill, Naval Air Station and Testing Site between Fallon and Austin)
* A national park - Great Basin National Park
* Where oldest trees resides - Ancient bristlecone pine trees
* Caves - Lehman Cave
* Castle - Stokes Castle in Austin
* Charcoal Oven - Ward Charcoal Oven State Park
* Airport in Fallon
* Hot Springs
* Earthquake Fault Line at Fairview Peak

B. How many roads in the US you can get stamps in major cities along the way to earn a governor signed certificate and a small gift as souvenir upon completion?
People I met there were warm, friendly, and helpful.
Felt safe traveling through Highway 50, which is a well paved road.
Technology is well embraced throughout the route where credit cards, mobile payments and WiFi connection are readily available in cities and hotels.
"Peculiar" or "Unique" or "Uncommon" is what I would call Nevada Highway 50.
I recommend a 3-day drive from Carson City to Baker and vice versa. Suggested itinerary and things to do are readily available for you to google online.
If you want to visit nearby cities like Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Virginia City, you may want to add 2 more days at least.

I've been on US50 from where it splits off from 6 at Ely, NV to Pueblo, CO, east & west...best part's between Montrose and Salida, CO...winding through the Rockies, along the Gunnison River...God Amighty, what a road.

Just got back from a 2100 mile road trip. By far my favorite part was this stretch of road. The views and isolation are breathtaking. You will never look at a gas station the same way again. Next time we plan to camp there for a week.

"The Loneliest Road in America" applies to US 50. This US highway takes you across Nevada. It is an open road, with only a couple of small towns, mountains and blue skies ahead. Plan on spending time in Ely NV, it has remnants of the boom from the late 1880's to early 1900's. There are only a few small towns that are 75 to 110 miles apart. Make certain you have fuel and your vehicle is in great shape.
The mountains in the distance and the open road go on forever. It is a relaxing and beautiful drive. The highway crosses several large desert valleys separated by numerous mountain ranges towering over the valley floors, in what is known as the Basin and Range province of the Great Basin. This is a great road trip to explore American history, and travel the path of the Pony Express. It conjures up images of the western pioneers as they forged west searching for gold and silver. Great local culture in some of the small towns.

We did this in two sections as part of a round road trip. There are lots of things to see and do on the route: Baker has the Great Basin National park and Lehman caves, Austin has museums and antique shops, Dayton has a museum and town trail, Carson city has a museum and the V&T railway, Ely has the Nevada railway to name a few, there are also sights along the open road such as Pony express locations and Giant Sand Mountain, cactus building at Stagecoach and VW beetle spider near Carson. Get the guide book and collect the stamps.

Route 50, running east/east across the middle section of Nevada has been labeled “The Loneliest Road in America.” The name, a holdover of an article in Life Magazine, seems to apply until you scratch the surface. While the road does take you through some desolate valleys, it also winds its way through some interesting towns and over some forested peaks that present a very different landscape than one would imagine. The Route starts/ends in Baker and works its way to Carson City near the California Border. Do not be tempted to drive all the way through without stopping as there are many interesting towns, sites, and vistas to appreciate. The State of Nevada has embraced the moniker and issues little passports to have stamped as you traverse the state. If you collect all the passport stamps, the state will issue you a certificate. For those that enjoy the open road this is well worth the experience. Without hiccups, the drive should be about 6 hours from one end to the other. Most of the road is a 2 lane highway so road construction may slow you down.

U.S Route 50 is known a the loneliest highway on the planet, we travelled from West Sacramento California thru Nevada. Lots and lots of small towns along the way, but true to advertising not a lot of other vehicles on the road. Also very sketchy cell coverage should you break down. Exciting. Taking the road less travelled.

schön zu fahren, aber die loneliest Route (zwischen Fallon und Ely) war es ganz sicher nicht. Erschütternd war der erkennbare Verfall der Ortschaften Austin, Eureka und auch Ely. Einen Tag später sind wir weiter gefahren in Richtung Panguich. Die Straße 21 zwischen Baker und Milford war mindestens genau so schön, jedoch um einiges einsamer.

We chose US 50 rather that I-80 driving west from Utah, and it was one of the most beautiful roads I've traveled. There aren't many highways in the western US I've not driven, and this ranks in the top tier. It's rugged, desolate, isolated, with virtually no services for many miles at a time. Also very little traffic.
We did make certain there wouldn't be a spring blizzard before choosing this route. I would not recommend this in bad weather.
The vistas, silence, austerity of the landscape and loneliness made the drive an otherworldly, almost zen-like experience.
We didn't have time to explore historical or archaeological sites, unfortunately, but I absolutely loved this road.

When traveling, we have always departed around nine thirty (9:30AM) in the mornings, and, we stop at the end of the day around four thirty (4:30PM) in the afternoons. By traveling this way, you keep yourself out of the morning and afternoon work traffic, and, the sun is never hampering your travels. Always get new travel guides, keep food and water in your vehicle, keep fuel in your tanks, and enjoy yourself. If traveling the desert and mountainous regions, find out ahead of time where all of the comforts for traveling are at. And finally, the answer that you wanted, view with the sun to your back and never in front of you for pictures and site seeing. Safe travels.

Is crime an issue on this road. Do we need to worry about modern day "bandits"? Who patrols the road, and by air or vehicle? Thanks.
