Standing on the west shoulder of the Neahkahnie Mountain, we were standing at one of the highest points along Oregon’s beautiful coast. From approximately 1661 feet, the view is incredible! It is difficult to find the words to describe this fabulous view. Standing there it is easy to understand why it is named Neahkahnie, a Native American word which means Home of the Supreme Being. Be sure when traveling the coast of Roegon, you stop at Neahkahnie Mountain. Great place to get fabulous photos!

We took the south approach which is shorter than the north; 3 miles round trip. It is a steep and rocky hike, so proper footwear is a must. To get to the summit you must scramble up rocks. There is a parking area with a port o pot, in case you need it.

Neahkahnie Viewpoint is one of the many vista turnouts along the Oregon Coast Highway, but its height above the ocean and the resulting long views along the sandy beach make it special. We were driving through from Astoria and had glimpsed cliffs and seastacks like Haystack Rock (Cannon Beach) along the way, but traffic dissuaded us from getting too close. Suddenly we got to this expansive view and understood why we all were wanting to see the Oregon coast.
Lots of trailheads here as well.

Moderate hike, great views! Look out for snakes though. We spotted 4 on our way, as long as we don't bother them, they don't bother us :)

We were driving to Neahkahnie Mountain. There was a viewpoint nearby. It was foggy. Still we liked it.
In the past, they tried to bring people on the road to enjoy nature. I liked that and it will continue hopefully.
Worthwhile to see!

We did the 3 mile hike starting from the south side of the mountain. Approaching from the south, the gravel turnoff is easy to miss because the sign is after the turn. We had a group of 5 kids ages 5-9 and 6 adults. The hike was manageable, but definitely not easy for a family looking for a relaxing hike. Bring water, bring a snack if you have small ones.
Here's the reality of the hike: 14 switchbacks cover most of the elevation gain in the first half. When you cross the service road, the hike becomes fairly level to take you around to the west side of the mountain for the view, but the trail becomes very narrow at places so watch your step. There's one more abrupt switchback at the very end of the hike that is easy to miss. Street that final turn, if you stay on the trail, you walk around the summit to a viewpoint and then the trail continues to the longer version. You can also climb up some roots and rocks to get to the actual summit. There are several narrow portions and away places near constant picking your way through tree roots. It was fun, but for a group like ours I would say moderate rather than easy.

Not for the rainy day. Some parts of the trail quite steep, hiking stiks can be handy.
Two ways to get to the top, 1-2 hr hike up. Wonderful view from the top, very rewarding!

The hike was moderate to difficult. Thick vegetation in some places and some portions are dense forest kind. Beautiful views at the top. Spend some time at the top enjoying the view. Definitely worth the visit. We went up through the north trail.

We are renting a car in Astoria after our ship docks for its first port of call. We are headed to Neahkahnie Mountain among several other stops. We are time restricted so I was wondering if the views from the mountain pictured are from hiking or next to a parking area? We do not have time to hike 3 miles. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks a million!

Views and pictures are from mostly mountain top. You get great views from highway along the coast. Just pull over.
