Rough road beautiful views
août 2021 • En famille
The road is rough to reach the visitor area. It's single lane most of the easy and gravel in some spots. Not everyone is willing to put a tire on the shoulder to pass. Once you make it the views are spectacular. The tours were finished when we arrived. The staff in the gift shop was very nice, but the chocolate was very expensive.

You took the adventure up the dirt road! It's definitely off the beaten path. We apologize that you encountered drivers who seemed resistant to also give some room. Unfortunately that's one of those factors we have very little control over. We are going to have a staff member take the route today so as to see where we can make improvements to the road itself. As far as the pricing goes, we know it's a splurge. Taking the tour, which generally requires booking in advance (the islands have been slammed!), you often have a better understanding of what goes in to the making of the chocolate- it's farm more complex than most people realize. We pay farm workers living wages and provide healthcare. We operate off-grid, use compostable single-use products, and manage 1,000 acres of farmland. It all comes at a high cost and the price is reflected in our products. While we know it's pricey we generally want our customers to understand why and feel good about the ethical business model that is our focus. I hope this shed some light on things for you!

A Tour Worth Taking
juin 2021 • En famille
We drove out to the Hilo side of the Big Island and visited the @lavaloha.hawaii cacao farm and learned about the whole process of making kokoleka (chocolate), from farm to table. The tour was incredibly educational and just a fun experience for our family. They kept everything very sanitary and our tour guide was the best. Definitely book your tour in advance but if you can't, it's worth drive up for the view from Mauna Kea and a visit to their cute little shop.

A 5-STAR VISIT
mai 2021
After just seconds of meeting our guide, Jeremy, we knew we were with someone who was a true lover of the land. Indeed, he was born and raised in Hilo and now is now raising his own family here. That love was evident throughout our tour and added that personal touch that made our experience at Lavaloha totally enjoyable and wanting to learn as much as we could. Thanks, Jeremy! It was wonderful being with you.

Jeremy is a wealth of information about organic cocoa farming...from its origins to its current location in Hilo...from its chemical compositions to its delicious end products.

Lavaloha is a definite must-see on your visit to Hawaii.

Beautiful overlook of Hilo
avr. 2021
Heard about this place by coincidence and was unaware this farm existed. The gift shop is small but has a decent selection of chocolate and other gift items. They offer tours but we were unable to attend one this trip. The grounds are beautiful and the staff was very friendly.

Amazing!

They were fantastic and so accommodating. We were late for our tour and while they couldn’t fit us in due to doing private tours because of COVID, they spent time with us, showed us the plants and still allowed us to do a taste test.

Highlight of our trip to the Big Island!
avr. 2021 • En famille
My son and I loved learning all about how this single origin farm came to be, the process of making the chocolate right on the property and how personal the tour felt. We were lucky enough to go just the two of us and our guide was extremely knowledgeable!! You can tell he has a passion for the farm and answered all of our questions with ease! Make sure to load up at the gift shop and visit the sunken garden!!

Perfect tour - learn about cocoa and eat delicious chocolate
mars 2021
This tour was just right. Our tour guide did an excellent job and we felt very at ease with her. Riding on the big cart was fun for my teens and nice for all of us as it was a little rainy. We enjoyed spotting some wild pigs and baby pigs, though the farm doesn't like them for the destruction they can cause. We learned so much about chocolate! It was interesting to see the inside of the cacoa pod, suck on the beans right there in the field, and see the different varieties. We also got to see where they roast the beans and that process, and ended with a chocolate sampling! Except for trying a nib, it was all very delicious! My teens enjoyed the tour - one hour was just right. We stopped by a waterfall on the farm, you can look at the history of different plants right on their porch, and shop in their gift shop. If you spend a certain amount, you get a free bottle of their partner wine. We brought home chocolate for gifts, and we're still enjoying the brand new coffee beans they grew!

Great Tour in a Beautiful setting
mars 2021
Jeremy gave us a great tour with lots of detail. We learned about chocolate growing, chocolate making, palm oil, and plans for the farm. We really liked their chocolate. We had dark chocolate fans that even enjoyed the milk chocolate and milk chocolate fans that liked the dark. We hope to return when they have hikes to their beautiful waterfalls.

Road to the farm was a bit bumpy.

We had the option of riding the cart or walking. It was a nice walk from the tour start to the chocolate making area. It was interesting see the difference in the chocolate plants at different elevations. We saw the largest ginger we've seen.

Make a reservation. They do fill up.
