This is a wonderful place to visit but I highly recommend you take a helicopter tour as there are only two roads and so much you can't see by only driving. Take hikes to see all the beauty.

We were fortunate to visit the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge which started on Kayaks from the Nawiliwili Harbour. We paddled the Huleia River about 4 kilometers, taking about an hour. Then we were taken on a short walk through part of the refuge where we took a minibus to where our hike began down to Jungle Falls. The path was slippery at times but it was an enjoyable trek to reach the falls. For those of us more adventurous, we took a dip in the cool pond of water at the base of the falls. To say it was refreshing is an understatement. We returned from where began the hike for a picnic lunch before returning to the harbour, but on the way back we made a short stop to view the Menehune Fish Pond.

Breathtaking area with beautiful scenery. When you take the road to the Menehune Fish Ponds you are along side of the wildlife refuge and the best place to get an overview is from the Menehune Fishpond Overlook.

or along the Hule'ia stream in a Kayak. It is closed to public visitation. Hule’ia National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1973 and is located in a valley between the Ha'upu range and along the Hule’ia River next to the Menehune Fish Pond. The refuge is home to endangered Hawaiian waterbirds found on Kauai. The refuge can be observed from the 'Alekoko (Menehune) Fish Pond lookout. Outstanding views.

We drove through the refuge on the single lane road. It was nice but the trail was the highlight. We hiked up a very steep and often muddy trail. I would recommend you wear hiking shoes for traction.
At http by the transmission lines you look out over the bay. The view was breath taking. On the other side you could see the valley which was also breath taking. I am so glad we kept on trekking through the mud.

Before leaving Hanalei, we stopped briefly at the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge where we saw taro paddies and quite an impressive array of rare birds including Hawaiian Stilt, Pacific Golden Plover, Hawaiian Moor Hen, Hawaiian Koot, Hawaiian Duck, and Hawaiian Goose.

Hule’ia National Wildlife Refuge consists of approximately 241 acres located in a valley between the mountain range and along the Hule’ia River next to the Menehune Fish Pond. The wildlife refuge is the home of various endangered waterbirds and other species found on Kauai. The refuge can be viewed from the Menehune Fish Pond lookout on scenic Hulemalu Road where we stopped for pictures.

We went on a half-day trip with a group that left from the Nawiliwili Harbor. You first paddle the Huleia River for an hour or so, then walk through a short part of the refuge. They take you in vans to a spot where you hike down to a private waterfall, which was gorgeous and refreshing. Then they feed you lunch. On the drive back to the harbor, they stop by lookout over the Menehune Fish Pond, which legend says was built in one night by the Menehunes, or our version of a leprechaun.
It was approx. $80 per person. I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the outfitter -- we booked it through the activity desk on the Marriott property right next to Duke's and Cafe Portofino.
This would be a great trip for folks with kids. We enjoyed the scenery, but not all the kids on our tour. We also wished for a longer paddle.
