A group of six of us went on the West Lake Tour, which started in a little Spanish tapas bar & bicycle shop named The Hanoi Bicycle Collective. They assigned two guides to us, Vaness and Binh, who were knowledgeable, attentive and took great care of us.

The whole tour took nearly five hours as we stopped at many sights along the way and took it an an easy pace - we stopped at a temple/pagoda where offerings were fervently being made on the first day of the lunar month, then had lotus tea at a lotus farm, before cycling on to the "dragon gate". We then went through some insane traffic to the B52 lake, before heading to Ngu Xa for a delicious local lunch of pho prepared in three different styles. All in, we covered about 20 km, cycling on quiet paths, small lanes and major roads.

The Hanoi traffic is quite something to contend with, but one just needs to follow the guides and ride fearlessly ... there's order in the chaos, and the Hanoi motorists will move around you so you need not really worry. There were many moments when we could not believe we were cycling in such hair-raising traffic, but at the same time, we never really felt in danger.

The danger eventually came in a snatch theft - where a member of our group had her backpack snatched from the basket in front of the bicycle. One can never be too careful in such situations.

But all in, this was a rewarding experience as the tour took us to places in Hanoi we would otherwise have never seen on our own. Certainly something I would recommend!

If you can handle the "thrill" of cycling in Hanoi traffic, this is the way to see the city and learn about the culture. The Hanoi Bicycle Collective in the Tay Ho District near West lake provides good bikes and helmets. Four of us did the Red River Tour. Our guide, Binh, was delightful and knowledgeable. She provided us with an unforgettable experience

Booked the West Lake tour with my friends. We were cycling along the West Lake with beautiful scene, nice weather and autumn breeze. The tour guide leaded us to those spots by bicycle. We were enjoyed so much.

We had local foods for lunch.

The most exciting part is we cycled in a busy traffic with those motorbikes, trucks and cars. That is my first time to try it. So exited.

We booked the West Lake and the Red River tour. Concerns about the traffic in Hanoi were dispelled rapidly as we began to cycle along quite small alleys and learned bit by bit to immerse the traffic and after two days we felt quite easy. We cycled around West Lake and found Lake B-52 and we crossed the impressive Long Bien Bridge respectively. Besides we learned much about daily life in Hanoi, enjoyed delicious local drinks and food and lost fear of eating streetfood. Our tour guide was careful and funny.

After 5 days of walking and looking at the traffic, it was time for us to join.

We did a tour around the lake with just our family (boys of 8 and 10). It was approx 17 km and it took us approx 3.5 hours. Our guide was very flexible, the boys fun and wellbeing was leading in here. She provided a lot of information and was very keen on showing the real Vietnam. She took us safely and with confidence through traffic. It made our boys conclude that cycling was actually easier than at home, “since here, you do not need to know any rules”.

The bicycles were in good condition. They had them in the size of our kids.

Would do it again.

We had loads of fun on this tour, biking was a nice change from walking and you covered a fair bit of ground while getting a bit of history. We chose the Red River tour from 8.30am-12.30pm which took us by a beautiful cemetery, along wide calm back streets and farmland, across the river, and yes into a little traffic but nothing too difficult to manage.

Our guide Doan was very relaxed but attentive and we really enjoyed our chat over a cup of tea at a local spot away from the Old Quarter. And lunch was delish :)

A great way to spend a morning away from the hustle and bustle, easily recommend for all levels.

I thoroughly enjoyed this cycling adventure and concur with other reviewers that this was an opportunity to see the side of Hanoi not seen by most tourists with a capable and interesting guide. From seeing a closeup of a cemetery to crossing the Long Bien Bridge, to having a cup of tea with the locals to seeing farming closeup it was definitely a highlight of my trip. I do think one needs to have a degree of comfort with the traffic as you will be riding in traffic at times. However, most of the trip is on the backroads and very relaxing. Since Hanoi has no hills to speak of (I bike in Seattle, wa.), I was not tired after the experience!

We are fans of city cycle tours...they usually show a different side of the city. We weren't disappointed with Urban Discovery. Despite being a little apprehensive about tackling the crazy city traffic, we were advised to simply be 'a rolling stone in a stream', so strapping on our helmets we threw ourselves into the abyss.

It was a tremendous morning. One minute we were up to our necks in motorbikes and trucks, the next we were bumping along dirt tracks in silence. From the backstreets to the countryside to the city traffic, we saw it all. There were regular stops along the way and the actual cycling wasn't strenuous.

If you are confident in the Hanoi traffic and want some adventure in your daily travels, then jump on a bike!
