Good place for people wishing to learn skiing. Runs are not to challenging, and thus not for the skiing enthusiast. No snow on our November visit.

I went to three ski resorts near Beijing on this trip this was the third. From the moment I arrived I had a difficult time. This resort may well be a lot of fun for local skiers, especially those that are learning (although I saw a lot of unhappy locals there as well) but I felt harassed and uncomfortable the whole time.
I stayed at the resort hotel, my check in procedure was terrible, they didn't accept credit cards, although the booking website indicated that they did. No one spoke much English, about 5-6 people crowded around me whilst I tried to check in and pay for the hotel, ski pass and equipment hire. The cashier messed everything up and gave me the ski rental card but not the room card, and then someone came chasing me for my passport (which I had tried to give them right at the very beginning in order to check in). There were no other guests checking in or at the cashier but I was being pushed and rushed.
The room looked lovely and was clean but had no hot water in the bathroom (at all I ran the tub for about 7 minutes) and the TV reception was pretty bad. After finally getting my stuff into my room, I went down to ski. The equipment I was given was uncomfortable and out of date, the skis and bindings were heavy and not set properly to the boots.
I swapped over to snowboarding and was given BRAND NEW equipment. Things were looking up. The only lift open when I arrived at about 10 or 11am was one magic carpet / moving walkway. A second one opened up a little later and a third in the afternoon when hundreds of school children arrived. Because this ski field is only for the basic beginners there are many instructors (few if any speak English). Some of them pestered me to try and offer me a lesson but accepted when I said I only speak English. One female instructor would not leave me alone and had another customer who happened to speak both ENglish and Chinese interpret that I was doing it wrong and I needed a lesson. She would not leave me alone even though I said I just wanted to have some fun (I have been skiing since I was three and have had several boding lessons in my life and was doing a fairly average job - but no worse than and considerably better than most of the other punters). I just had to get off the lift and walk away as she would not leave me alone and she was embarrassing the lady who was trying to interpret.
The range of food was terrible (although they had some good street food on a bbq in the afternoon). The safety standard was absolutely terrible on the lifts and people were getting in all sorts of predicaments. In addition it is difficult to get to and get away from. The website says they will pick Hotel Guests up from Badaling Train station and drop them off but they refused to do that for me when I left. The breakfast was the same for the guests as it was for the staff (very basic) as compared to any other Chinese Hotel i stayed in (I stayed in 13 on this trip and about 8 on my last trip to China full range see my other reviews). The hotel was not at all good value for money.
It wasn't even particularly picturesque place. There really were no redeeming features except the new snow board equipment.

As first-timers, the children and I, almost all 13 of us had a great time there. However, bear in mind this place only suits beginners and offers basic and first-time experience. Go if you do not expect a lot of slopes, cable cars, various activities, cafe, etc. We paid RMB 30 for the entrance fee. Then, we paid for a personal coach (for 1 hour) for each child. It was a Monday and there was no crowd. A huge team of coaches were there to assist us, from A to Z, renting a locker, trying on the ski boots, etc... They even escorted all adults to the ski field, coaxed us into engaging their coaching lesson, which we thanked them profusely and declined politely. After 1 hour, almost all children started skiing on their own, and I gradually improved on my skill too. I think in that hour, the coach managed to guide the children for 4 to 5 rounds of skiing from the top of the slope to the downhill (the starting point). My sis stopped skiing because the coach was too persistent and wouldn't stop coaxing her into paying for the personal coaching. After 1 hour, the coach advised me to extend the coaching for another 1 hour, which I declined. Then, they 'finally' went to approach other visitors. "Suddenly", we were on our own... a few times when children slipped and fell, no help was offered. and we had to struggle clumsily to help them up (coz we were also in our ski boots, etc) So, two of us stopped skiing, and watched and helped others from then on. I am not sure if other ski villages have staff to monitor the ski activities, to prevent dangerous stunts, to prevent collisions, etc... but here, we helped each other, not the staff. Gradually, almost everyone was skiing with ease, and we had a few good videos of everyone skiing. My 2 children corrected my skill (how to slow down, to make an emergency stop, etc) and I was skiing with no difficulties into the second hour. There were no proper place for us to sit or for children to "play" in the open. Luckily, all of us could ski. If you have children or adults of different ages, with different needs for various activities, it could be a problem. From what I saw, It is either ski, or sit indoors. In short, we enjoyed the ski experience and the cheap entrance fee was reasonable. However, we have a higher expectation now, for our next ski experience. I would rate this as an average venue, for a first time ski experience, for a few hours, due to its average service, facilities, varieties and scenery.

Went to this skiing centre after visiting the Badaling Great Wall in the morning. It is quite near to the Great Wall, and hence save some time travelling if were to depart from other Great Wall spots. Suggest to come to this place in the morning time because there isn't much crowd as there would be in the afternoon. Kindly note that every single piece of equipment/clothing there is charged, so bring your own set whenever possible (personally ski goggle seems important as the sun shine is so bright! also, normal hand gloves might be wet after some time, and it is really cold especially in the fingers). For first timer, it might be good to explore about skiing by your own. There will be a group of coach waiting to coach you at certain price (negotiable) if they caught you inexperience in skiing, sometimes a little bit annoying though. Bring some snack as it is exhausting even only after short period of skiing.

My husband and I went to Badaling Skiing resort after visiting the Great Wall. This was the first time skiing for us, and we were very excited. Our private tour guide led us into the centre and advised us on where to get the coach, the equipment etc.
The coach we got was very good. We engaged him to coach two of us. He was patient, serious and very experience too! We were lucky to get him as our coach but not all were so lucky, one of the people we met there saw how our coach teaching us, she passed by and told me, saying that we were lucky to get one which was so serious and responsible. Our coach made sure we understand what he was teaching and made us try again and again, he also demonstrate to us again and again Although the weather was cold, he sweat. It showed how serious he was.
The Ski resort was big, the staffs there were courteous and helpful. It was a great experience for first timer like us. Worth a try.
