If you fancy her poetry or feel the need to solve the mystery of the beautiful, talented, eccentric and reclusive woman, then visit this evocative space. We had a very well-informed and articulate guide (who however avoided any kind of controversy about reputed family scandals and Emily Dickinson's possible lesbianism). One small quibble was that it was required to shut the doors of each very small room we visited, which, combined with the full tour group and the wildly-patterned wallpaper, led to quite a bit of claustrophobia! Note that one emerges with more questions than answers; that's not a bad thing.

I have wanted to visit the Emily Dickinson House Museum for years. The experience far exceeded my expectations. Our tour guide, also named Emily, was fantastic. She had such enthusiasm and passion for the poet and the house, and she was very knowledgeable, able to answer in depth all of the questions tossed at her. The visit was totally worth it.

My daughter booked us a tour reservation for my visit and I went in with mild expectations. As a window into literary and social history, it was a treat.

From the piano in the parlor (the tour guide invited one of the tour group to play) to the board with the sliding bars displaying the changes that Dickinson made to her poems, there were many interesting points.
Among them were that Dickinson's father gave her books but implored her not to read them lest they jostle her mind and that the first collection of Dickinson's poems were edited by her brother's mistress.

I'd go back again.

Personal note: would the Vanderbilt alumna who played the piano for our tour group on Friday, August 10, please contact me through Trip Advisor.

We purchased tour tickets in advance and arrived early to walk around the yard and garden. On this tour, you experience Emily's world. Our very knowledgeable guide took our small group room by room, quoting Emily's poetry and sharing insights into her life. Seeing examples of the pages on which Emily wrote her poems ( all untitled because she was not writing to be published) and noted possible word substitutions ( which can change the theme of the poem) was very interesting. Standing in her bedroom where Emily composed, at her little lady's desk, and seeing the view she saw, was special. The museum utilized the covid time to refurbish the home as authentically as possible. Most people know her name. The home/museum provides a real person, a life, to that name. There are two handicap parking spots right behind the home. And don't forget "Hope is the Thing with feathers..."

Even my spouse who thought this would be some hagiographic chick fan club thing was impressed. In addition to being a very good period house tour, the guide provided context to Dickinson's work, as well as information about her work process, where she composed her poems, etc. I loved how the guide placed Dickinson within the framework of what was going on around her and in her community. By providing factual information some myths were easily busted, and we were left with a portrait of a fully formed human being -- flawed, imperfect, but always striving to perfect her art.

Beautiful property -- although we couldn't get a ticket to the actual tour, which was disappointing, the gardens and both properties were nice. We did get to go inside the first floor and see the dining room and gift shop.

We stopped here while passing through town, as we’re glad we did so. Even if not a major fan of Miss Dickinson’s poetry, it is still a thrill to see her writing desk and look out the window she did as she wrote. The docents are knowledgeable, but sometimes contradictory: after being told in one room that the myth of Emily being a recluse were simply not true, we were told in a further room that she was a recluse and barely left the house. That aside, it was a worthwhile experience. Be sure to visit the gravesite a few blocks away. Street parking.

After watching the entertaining Emily Dickinson mini series, I was intrigued about her and the truthfulness of the show. Our guide, Melissa, was fantastic. She encouraged questions of all sorts and patiently and knowledgeably answered our questions. The house is beautifully appointed, and it was a plus for us that we visited on a beautiful sunny June day so we could spend time in the gardens as well.

Our tour was led by a woman who not only had extensive knowledge of Emily Dickinson but she also quoted Emily's poetry throughout the tour. It was inspiring! The tour provided a comprehensive look at Emily's life, from her childhood, to parents and brother and sister in law. Each room held a new key to unlock Emily's life. There was even a room dedicated to the mechanics of Emily's poetry, which helped those us that love her poetry and those unfamiliar with it. I cannot say enough good about this tour. We thoroughly enjoyed it!

Those who love Emily Dickinson will love this museum. The docents are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and departs from a reading room. There are some unique family items on display. There are spacious restrooms and a small gift shop inside the house. We were required to wear masks and they are available if you don't have one with you. The first floor of the house is accessible, but not the second. I understand there are but two rooms on the second floor that are part of the tour. The grounds are lovely and making is available both on the grounds and along the street. We did need to book a tour in advance and slots fill up fast.
