Matis Carpet Company, Kusadasi, Aydin, Turkey
In July of 2023, I had occasion to visit this company. Many spoke English quite well. They were very polite and courteous. They taught me much about Turkish carpet weaving. They showed many sizes, many materials, and many patterns. We decided to purchase one of the carpets that fit our size and color desires. The carpet was too large for us to take with us, so they arranged shipping from their store to our home in America and accommodated our delivery date requirements. The shipping company in America was fully engaged to ensure the safe receipt of the carpet, as well. All communicated with us, as needed, and we are now the proud owners of their artistic handywork. A great group of people to work with.

It was recommended by our guide, and with the volume and crafts women showing how it’s done at the start. It seemed like a legitimate place to purchase our rugs, $3500US in total.
Turns out they aren’t Turkish rugs but Chinese rugs which are available online for a couple of hundred dollars.
Really gutted, this was by far our biggest purchase of our travels. I have no respect for the owner / management of the store and recommend people give this store a miss. Do not trust a word of what they say.

We were taken there by our guide. He told us in advance that he gets a cut from all sales which is usual in most places. The place is huge and has a huge collection of rugs of different types. We wanted two rugs and liked two but one needs to bargain to get the price down. We took pictures of the rugs we bought. Make sure the price includes shipping and customs. We told them to ship in two weeks since this was the beginning of our trip. The did everything they promised and we got our beautiful rugs.

Our home is warm, solid neutral colors in classic Greek Mediterranean, so we were not expecting to find a Turkish rug to fit our style. We wanted something for our front entry. Our private tour guide, Serap owner of Reliable Travel in Goreme, took us to Matis. He showed us a solid wool on cotton machine-made rug. We chose to carry it home. FYI … it was heavy … but worth it. We are very please with how it looks in our home.

You go here and they show you how Turkish carpets are made and try to sell some to you. It’s a typical place tour complained take you to.

Our tour guide assured us this place was reputable, but after our experience and reading of those of other clients, I'm no longer so sure. The place provides a nice demonstration of carpet making and rolls out gorgeous carpets. My and I ended up buying one, of course, for a hefty price. I was ok with it, though, as it was certainly a beautiful carpet. We asked the carpet to be packed and we carried it ourselves. When we got home, however, my wife felt the carpet we unpacked was not exactly the same one we had been examining in the shop. Difficult to tell, as we're not experts and we didn't keep our eyes on the carpet the entire time is was being packed. Who knows? We haven't had the carpet appraised yet, to know if we were ripped off or not. Like any expensive purchase, if you don't know the product intimately, it's good to have a real expert help you.

Beautifully-crafted rugs are the pride of Turkey, and a legacy from the ancient Turkish migration from Mongolia (northern Asia) to the Anatolian Plateau. The Matis Turkish Rug School is a government-sponsored school to preserve and teach ancient weaving techniques. I enjoyed an excellent tour covering rug production: starting with silkworm cocoons in a tub, unwinding the cocoons, spinning thread, using natural dyes, and the painstaking creation of a carpet on a loom. Rug makers work from a pattern and must have nimble fingers to tie the tiny knots in the precise locations and colors. I was given advice about what to look for when purchasing: fine silk rugs may have up to 450 knots per square inch on both front and back of the rug. Angora is the best wool, and 300 knots per square inch is the maximum number that can be done on wool. Dozens of beautiful rugs in a variety of styles, colors and designs were spread on the show-room floor, and we were invited to touch them, even walk on them. I consumed a light lunch and beverages (gratis) while contemplating an abundance of carpets, large and small for sale. Prices varied quite a bit, depending on complexity of design, fabric, and number of knots per square inch. Matis Turkish Rug School offered to ship any rugs purchased to my home. If you think you might purchase a rug while in Turkey, this is an excellent place to learn about what to look for, even if you wind up buying a rug elsewhere.

I bought a beautiful luxurious bamboo rug - what I received was a flimsy thin "mat" with the label I signed on the original rug simply stapled to the back of this very average replica. And there is a white fringe on this mat that is already starting to unravel. There was no fringe on the rug I was sold.
Buyer beware!!!! Please do not believe what they tell you.
