Lake Toya is amazingly beautiful. Serene, quiet & blissful. Despite being Holiday week, there weren’t many visitors.
Good place to stay overnight, there an option for camping too.
Restaurant options are limited during dinner time as I guess most visitors make a day trip.
Must do - take a ferry trip (return fare ¥1600 per adult) which run every 30mins. Give yourself a couple of hours on the island for hiking. There is a museum which one can also visit.
It’s a 2 hour drive each way.

The Toya Restaurant is a conveniently located small restaurant right by the highway. Ordering is in multiple languages thus easy. I ate the Crab Sandwich which was good, albeit pricey at 3500 yen.
The toilet is clean.

Beautiful place! Managed to be there when almost bare of tourists on a glorious sunny day. Took ferry to island and just had time for a short hike cos all walks must be finished by 3pm.
Ferry ride past beautiful scenery was special, too.

This review is based on the weather alone. It was raining which wasn’t good for any activities including pictures. I can see how this would be a beautiful crater lake to canoe on if it was a sunny day.

We stayed right on the shore of this lake at Toyako Manseikaku Hotel Lakeside Terrace. I walked a lots around this area and enjoyed the lake in the winter season. Very photogenic.

There are also sightseeing boats on Lake Toya (around 1,800 yen per person), and fireworks are set off for about 20 minutes every day during this time of year. You can also watch the fireworks from a sightseeing boat. There is also the Lake Toya Onsen hot spring resort, and you can see the lake from the hotel where you stay, which is very relaxing.

I would have chosen another part of Hokkaido if I knew this. It's 90 degrees. Very scenic. Skip the south part full of tourists. North is quieter more scenic. I wish I had camped here.

We stopped here for a rest on the way from Muroran to Niseko.
The weather was good and we could clearly see the islands floating in Lake Toya.
The water was also clean, so we enjoyed a rest.

Pretty walk around the lake. Very easy walk. It was sunny out. Could see through the clear waters. There was a ferry going around the lake as well

The lake is very scenic, but it was difficult to really explore on foot in March, because everything was closed - there was a walk a little way around the lake, then it was on the road, and there was a Ropeway ( cablecar) up Mt Azu, but all the walks from the top station were closed. Similarly with the walking trails to the mudslide monument area. This was a seasonal thing, but the frustration was that the season was really early, and all the walks were easily clear of snow and ice, but you still weren't allowed to walk. In the end we took ourselves off to the sunken road outside of town, which was reasonably interesting.

Anything in mid Nov? No fireworks at night, worth a night's stay? Thx!

I think not much place to explore and just scenic view lake with few parks to relax.

Hi, my family and I (5 adults in total) are planning to visit Lake Toya on Dec 6, 2019. We will be arriving at JR toya station around 10am and will be spending the night at Toyako onsen town. During the day, we would like to visit Lake Hill Farm, Shikotsu Toya National Park silo observatory, and Mt. Usuzan Ropeway. Is there any bus that will take us from Toyako onsen town to all these places. Some articles mention that donan bus is available but I could not access the donan bus website. If we take public transportation, will all these itinerary fit in one day? Or should I cut the trip short by not going to the ropeway?
Also, is there any car rental company (with driver) that is based around Lake Toya. Will this be a better option compare to donan bus?
Rédigé le 24 août 2019
To meet your full itinerary with bus is not possible. Bus schedule is not frequent for all the places. Best option is to drive but if you are requesting for a driver to drive you around that’s not easy to find. Rent a car and self drive is the best.

Planning to visit Lake Toya in early March 2020. Just wondering how is the weather in the area around that time in the past. Is there still snow?
Rédigé le 24 juin 2019
Went there March last year. No snow fall during my 6 days there but my tour guide said there is snow fall the day before i arrived.
But make no mistake, the snow still very thick & the snow activities still operate during March. March is the best time to go there during winter in my opinion provided you are not looking for snow fall.

Hi, read much good review abt Lake Toya. Like to visit mid Jul. Would like to do a day trip from Sapporo and hopefully can catch the fireworks before getting back. Can someone advise how to get there via public transport? Will there be any issue to get transport back after fire works?
