The Rafflesia Information Centre in Tambunan is open daily to visitors from 9 am to 5 pm. We visited during a cloudy afternoon and was the last group that particular day.
You first need to register, fill up some forms (registration form for your group, liability disclaimer forms and such) and make the necessary payments. The entrance fee for a Malaysian adult is RM5 (non-Malaysian adult RM15) and for a child RM3 (non-Malaysian child RM7). Guide fee is RM50 for a group up to 5 pax. (non-Malaysian RM100).
We got into a 4x4 and the guide assigned to us drove us to the start of the trail, where we did a short hike of about 20 minutes to reach the Rafflesia in bloom. Started on paved cement path and eventually veered off into actual forest trails. We were lucky and got to see two Rafflesia blooms (both were about 40 cm in diameter), one of which was only on its second day since blooming. Very, very beautiful! We were also shown the Rafflesia in various other stages of its lifecycle - new buds forming, larger buds that looked like cabbage that would open up/bloom in another 1-3 months' time, 'blackish' blooms that had expired and were rotting away, some unlucky buds and blooms partially eaten by squirrels. Only one species of Rafflesia could be found in Tambunan - the Rafflesia pricei.
The trails, including the cemented path with moss growing on some parts, can be slippery. Two of our friends had falls, but thankfully no serious injuries. Hence, it is important to dress appropriately for a forest hike on trails and wear covered, non-slip shoes. We did not encounter leeches that afternoon, but they are known to be around especially after a rain shower. Not many mosquitoes so that's a good thing.
Would recommend this experience to see one of Malaysia's iconic wonders!!

Is a couple of hours drive from KK on the windy Crocker Range road. If driving across island (and back again) to/from Sandakan you can pass this way one of your legs? Check the facebook page to see if a plant has started flowering (lasts about 4-6 days) otherwise not worth visiting. If one is flowering then pay the cheaper Park entrance fee PLUS the more expensive RM100 fee for a guide to take you to the flower. they life history and size is pretty amazing!

The staff here is absolutely amazing! I contacted them by Whatsapp and they updated me daily on flowering and other details. I couldn't believe the kindness and attention to detail their staff showed in helping us plan our trip. Thank you!

Be warned - wear leech socks for this walk in the forest. It was our first day in Sabah and we had no idea that we were going to be taken for a walk through the forest therefore we were not wearing boots and leech socks and the guides said nothing. The result was a leech attack.
All that aside we had great views of two Rafflesia pricei flowers and lots of buds plus some old flowers. The guides were knowledgeable and helpful - apart from the leech socks!!

Great experience. We saw the life cycle of the Rafflesia - baby buds, 3 day old bloom, 5 day old bloom, 6 day old bloom, and a dead one! We were there on a muddy and slippery day. Rented boots from the centre for RM4. Guide was RM50. The tour was RM5 per pax. The climb into the forest was a steep but short one. Worth the trip if you can see several Rafflesia. This species is called Rafflesia Pricei. No smell!!!

This rafflesia center is a good place to stop when you explore the outskirt of Kota Kinabalu. The rafflesia species here is beautiful.

Although they look like clay and don’t have much of a scent they are very lovely to see and we were lucky to see both male and female versions

is there a better season. to see the Rafflesia...or can they be seen all year long?
Rédigé le 21 novembre 2016
I saw in March and at that time there we two fully bloomed Rafflesia, 3-4 in blooming stage and 2 dead. Since the flower take 6 months to bloom, there is no as such season. You can check with local tour guide to take you to places where you can see bloomed rafflesia.

Hi Helen, We are visiting in April and thinking of hiring a car. can you just turn up at the reserve without prior booking ? also what are the roads on the drive up like, are they tarmaced and safe ?
Thanks
Alex

Can hire a car and drive. Road has some twists and is hilly, but is sealed all the way. Be careful if is wet as can find areas with loads of water on road. Take your time on drive and will be fine. Would suggest that you plan a number of activities rather than just spend upto four hours on a trip for the flowers. Check at Tourist Centre and plan a round trip with a number of options. Enjoy
