I booked three Tours over three years and SmarTours has cancelled each trip and issuing a credit towards the next trip that they also cancel! Now we are stuck in a cycle of booking tours that we will never get because SmarTours always cancels our tours. They refuse to refund any portion of our payments. SmarTours is the worst company ever, just horrible all around!!

User's recommendation: BEWARE! STAY AWAY!!

I had an amazing time when I used Smartours to explore Eastern Europe with a group of friends a couple years ago. I was super excited to use them again. So my friend and I booked the Greece tour and paid the deposit in May. Then several months AFTER we paid our deposit SMARTOURS changed their policy making it to where they would no longer provide service to those who haven't received the COVID vaccination. This meant we had to cancel due to them refusing to provide service. I knew when I paid the deposit that it was nonrefundable. However, I was certain they would make an exception since the cancelation was due to THEM REFUSING SERVICE, and nothing on our side of things. After several emails and unreturned phone calls, it is clear they have no intention to refund the deposit. It is unfortunate. I hope they enjoy the $300. It is only a small portion of what I would have spent if I was to continue traveling with them. However I will never book another trip through them again as I feel cheated. It is fine to refuse service... a company has every right to do so... but it is not right to keep money for the service you refuse to provide.

(PS ~ The date is incorrect on this site... it wouldn't allow me to select canceled.)

I have traveled on many SmarTour vacations and have enjoyed most; but for the first time SmarTour cancelled a planned vacation due to lack of participants and refused to return my deposit. This may not be of concern to you; but beware of their policy, which I did not know.

I was booked on a SMARTours trip to Portugal for May 2020 and they cancelled the trip...they cleverly say they suspended the trip. They refuse to give me my full payment back and only offer a different trip in the future or the same trip to Portugal next year. In a time of the world pandemic, most every travel partner is waiving fees and bending over backwards to accommodate customers with travel disruptions. Not SMARTours...they are taking a one-sided approach with no give and take at all. People signing up for a trip today would pay a trip deposit with final payments due next year. For me as a fully paid traveler they will have my full payment for a year before next year’s trip....if they go at all. They should refund all except the initial deposit if they don’t offer the next trip for a year. I strongly urge travelers to shop elsewhere and avoid SMARTours.

This was my wife and I first trip on SmarTours. The hotels that we stayed in were 2 star hotels w/o any amenities. On all my other tours using other tour companies, the hotels were either 3star or 4star. When they had dinner for the tours, the dinners were not very good. They had different guides in each city and I only felt that one of them new what they were talking about. The rest sounded like they were canned speaches. I would not use this tour company again.

smarTours

My wife and I signed up for a tour to Vietnam and Cambodia with smarTours, a company we have traveled with in the past and that we trusted. Our trip is scheduled to depart from Los Angeles on 4 February 2020. Because of the coronavirus crisis, we have been very concerned about health issues as the number of cases worldwide has increased daily.

Given that we have to depart from the east coast of the United States a couple of days before the 4 February departure we have made many reservations for hotels, flights, and other accommodations. Accordingly, we have contacted smarTours numerous times to learn if they plan to cancel the trip. Consistently, they had no answer but promised to call or e-mail us as soon as they made a decision.

The calls or e-mails never came, but tonight (30 January 2020) we checked on the Smartours website and found this information:

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the coronavirus outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
Effective immediately we have canceled all March and April departures to our China tours:
* “The Best of China” departing March 3rd, 2020
* “The Best of China” departing April 7th, 2020
* “China & Yangtze River Cruise with Hong Kong” departing March 12th, 2020
* “China & Yangtze River Cruise with Hong Kong” departing April 9th, 2020
* “China & Yangtze River Cruise with Hong Kong” departing April 23rd, 2020

While some concerns exist for traveling in the wider Asian area, there is currently no reason to cancel any existing trips to countries outside of China or that utilize Chinese airports outside of the Wuhan region. We are, however, looking to reroute our trips via other airports and airlines and ask for your patience as we look at alternatives. We will be in touch as soon as we have alternate options.

The CDC has also issued a: Warning Level 3, Avoid Nonessential Travel. CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to China. And the State Department has issued a level Red, Do Not Travel to China, advisory.

Coronavirus has already been found in Vietnam and the smarTours trip to Vietnam and Cambodia is using China Eastern airlines via Shanghai, China. They have been saying for almost a week that they are trying to reroute the flights. As of this evening (30 Jan 2020) they have had no success, which is not surprising given that many airports have been closed and several airlines have suspended all flights to the region.

Despite all this information, smarTours has not canceled the two week Vietnam / Cambodia trip which begins on 4 February at the beginning of the continuing spread of the coronavirus.

Our trust that smarTours has considered our health and safety has disappeared and we question their reasoning in continuing this trip, even if they can reroute the flights. We have two additional trips planned with smarTours but are giving considerable thought to ever traveling with them again.

If I could give smartour zero stars I would. I have been in a dispute with smartours for four months now. Smartours made a mistake on my last name and never fixed it! Luckily, the day before the trip I called to ensure my name was correct on my ticket. It wasnt! The day of the trip I was calling back and forth with smartours until they came to the conclusion that they needed mw to pay 150$ to fix a mistake they made or I can chose to not go on the cruise and wastes thousands! With months of calling and filing complaints on the BBB they promised me a refund and lied to my credit card company saying they did give me a check. They never did. They never call you back when they say they will. The customer service here is the WORST EVER. The stress smartours has given me the day of my trip really set a horrible mood for my trip I was planning for a year. When putting so much money into a trip like I did you want to make sure you have good customer service and a fast response in case there are problems. Go to a different company and be stress free!

Tour was not as advertised when we paid for it. Many cities, shore excursions, additional land tours were deleted from the itinerary last minute without explanation.Shore excursions were cut short by up to 2hrs with out explanation..The riverboat was changed to a lesser vessel with very small, cramped, accommodations. We had issues with a public bathroom flooding into our cabin. We were not told our trip was booked during a German Religious Holiday, consequently most cities visited were shut down.. We were promised a half day in Rotterdam and a full day and a half in Amsterdam..the former was completely eliminated and we arrived in Amsterdam at 3:00pm the day before departure allowing for a fast paced walking tour of a small part of the city lasting 21/2 hours..flights were scheduled so early travelers were asked to be up and on the bus by 4:30am to depart for their flights not allowing any time at night in Amsterdam.
When brought to the attention of Smartours my mother and I were given a very small refund $200.00 for the inconvenience of the cabin flood and told they would not discuss the "bate and switch" trip.. All without explanation..Our weather was perfect, the river was at a perfect flow.. True "Buyer Beware" situation

Reviewers often give companies a bad review based on a single bad experience. We are very experienced travelers and know you may have some problems here and there, but we can speak with first-hand, and long-term, knowledge of this company. We have been on at least 7 trips with SmarTours and have been very happy overall. We just returned from New Zealand and Australia and have also been to eastern Europe, Cuba (excellent), South America (very highly recommended!), Vietnam/Cambodia, Russia river cruise (not much to see between Moscow and St. Petersburg), and Iceland. As members of the SmarTraveler frequent traveler program, we often get perks on our trips (room upgrades, fruit baskets, bottle of champagne, etc.) The guides are generally great (with the exception of the disorganized woman in Iceland). Groups are usually less than 24 and on a big bus there is plenty of room to spread out. We like the itineraries and recommend the company.
