I traveled solo and being the only guest staying at the National Park at that time on weekdays. Actual plan was to stay one night but extended to two nights due to its serenity.

Was wondering how about my meals there before I came but there's a canteen keeper, Mr Jalin, who stays there and ready to cook, apart from some food that I brought. Second option is Pasar Lapok which is 9km away.

Electricity is rationed here where the power supply runs from 6.30am to 11am and 5pm to 11pm. Recommended to bring a torchlight as it gets pitch black after 11pm. Could spot some fireflies though.

For phone connection, only Celcom is available and the antenna tower is also powered by generator so there's chance that it might have outage.

No sounds from the road at all and the accommodation is not inside the jungle as the main attraction is the lake. The ethnic who lives here are the Berawan.

Even though I came during the dry season, my initial plan was to have a break alone surrounded by nature and here I found it. When else to experience walking on a huge lake flats.

It's great for an overnight or day trip from Miri. Drive is pretty easy, about 2hr 10mins from Miri city centre. The entrance fee is really cheap. They have lodgings at the main building, hostel like rooms, I think MYR15 per bed. But we opted for Mutiara Bunut homestay - Mr Roland was on hand to greet us. Super friendly couple and the place is spotlessly clean. Mutiara Bunut have their own WiFi down at the hang out area and even features renewable energy delights like solar powered amenities. I recommend the tour of hte lake by day trip. They will host a fishing excursion if you call ahead, if not, just get the fresh fish from them which they will cook at the smokehouse.

We booked a trip to Loagan Bunut with Mutiara Homestay Resort. A day before the trip, we were informed the water level was low (2 ft) & were given a choice to proceed or cancel the trip. We proceed with low expectation, well no lake tour. The journey fr Miri took 2 hrs. The road conditions is good except for early part due to a hiway construction. We were greeted by our host, Mr Roland, who took us to his homestay via a boat. Despite low water level, the boat ride from PHQ to the resort was smooth with an awesome views. The homestay is beautiful, unique & very clean. The views of sunrise & sunset from the homestay were beyond words. As there’s no lake tour, we spent our time taking pics, chatting with our friendly hosts (Mr Roland & Mdm Doreen), cooking our dinner & breakfast. We made a good decision to visit the lake when the water is low as it offers a different scenic view. Overall the trip was above our expectations. Will go again when the water level is high.

Try the boat ride around the lake and river. Book thru the National Park reception. The local boat operator by the name Jalen very friendly to answer all ur question. Book for fishing trip next time and stay a night on floating house. Good experience. They said the lake will be dried during hot season and can just walk thru.

I originally come from this place, my village approximately 30km from this Logan Bunut. Been here few time for a short visit.

Before you come please make sure to give a call and ask about the water level. If you come during dry season I can say it not worth to visit unless you come during monsoon / rainy season.

If you love nature/quite place you may plan to stay at their chalet. I’m not sure if it is worth depend on your interest.

If you plan to stay overnight, ensure you bring some snack or foods. The nearest small town around 10km and no public transportation access to this area unless you drive your own.

You can check the chalet availability if you plan to stay overnight, just my advise do not confirm/pay your room in advance in case you change your minds.

It take approximately around 2.5hours drive from Miri. No public transportation available, you may rent a car, the road condition is good even small compact car such as VIVA / AXIA can reach here easily.

Been here several times for short visits over the years. It is a scenic lake-side national park, but I think it looks nicer when water levels are high. The facilities could use more attention and upgrading. I am glad the road to the park has much improved and can be easily accessed now. Its good if you are interested in research into tropical ecosystems, and such, or if you want a short hike through the area. Didnt see any boat roads while I was there, so its best to call ahead and confirm if you are looking for specific activities.

We went to Loagan Bunut by car in 2 and half hours from Miri city. The road condition is good. The junction turning into the National Park is located right after SMK Tinjar. Once you arrived to the park, the entrance fee is RM 10 per person for Malaysian and RM 20 for foreigner. Unfortunately, our visiting period was dry season and the lake water level was low. The boat man was not around to have a river cruise. The disappointing moment was when we hike the trail, it was just 260m long and there was no much attraction in the jungle instead of making a turn out to the main road. The view of Loagan Bunut was splendid but there was no view point for tourist to relax while enjoy the scenery. Overall, the national park is not up to the expectation. If you were to visit to this place, it is better to make a phone call to the person-in-charge to check if the water level is good for lake tour. Or you may visit during dry season if you are able to walk to the lake without any muddy path.

The drive there is excellent. We drove all the way from Miri in a salon car. We went there expecting to explore the place and the surrounding places around the lake, but only to be disappointed. Let me explain. There was only one trail which was available to be explored, but only 200meter long. When I found out how short the trail was, I lost interest. There were no paths or trail around the lake or anywhere else except that 200m trail. When we were there, no boats were around to take visitors to explore the lake. We tried finding a spot where one could have an over view of the lake. None! Besides the little area around the NP office, there is nothing much to do. It looks like the dry season might be a better time to visit the lake as it would dry and one could walk on it. So, we might come back during the dry season. There is a small canteen that serves very simple and basic food. Electricity is available. When we were there, the fans and lights were on during the day.

Suitable for day trip from Miri, Sarawak with main attraction of boat cruising around the lake to see the lowly populated villages and also fishermen catching the fishes. Hiking trails are available but the longest trail was inaccessible during my visit due to fallen trees after heavy thunderstorm.

Main things you need to know about Loagan Bunut National Park (Dec 2014):

(1) Transportation
The roads are all paved from Miri to Loagan Bunut Park HQ. You can use car of any size to reach the Park (the information provided in Sarawak Forestry and many other websites related to gravel road and the need of 4WD vehicle is no longer true). You will need slightly more than 2 hours of driving from Miri to the Park

(2) Accommodation
You may stay at accommodation at Park HQ or locally operated chalet or floating cabin where you could spend the night fishing and BBQ the fishes. The floating cabin is owned by a local fisherman and can accommodate up to 6 adults. Other than being accompanied by local fishermen, visitors are not allowed to fish in this Park

(3) Boats
There are open but narrow fiber-glass boats that could comfortably accommodate up to 5 people for cruising around the lake (1 hour trip – extra charges for cruising downstream the river from the Lake) or you may opt for the more expensive but bigger boats with shed.

(4) Catches by Fishermen
Catches (by local fishermen) are plenty when the Lake water level starts to recede (in February, May, June/July) as shallower water gets warmer and the fishes start to migrate out of the Lake. The floating cabin is actually a traditional fish catching station.

(5) Handphone Signal
You could use your mobile phone there

(6) The Park Staff
Friendly, helpful, and is willing to help look after of my laptop (too hot to be left in car, and there is chance of water splashes inside the boat)
