While on our tour , we stopped to view this ruins of Ksar .This historic and cultural site where you can admire what must have been and see now some of the living quarters of the past.

Moulay Er-Rachid, brother and Caliph of Sultan Hassan I, lived and governed here from 1847. He sided with Vichy France in WWII while the King's family sided with the Allies. The ruins of Ksar Oulad Abdelhalim are part of the former palace complex. Scions of the Alaouite dynasty are still living here and live in fear that they be imprisoned or killed someday for the roll they played during the war. We wandered through this historic and cultural site admiring what used to have been. It was very interesting to walk thru what now are people's living quarters and observe the faded splendor of the past.

While on tour, we visited this Berber small village and enjoyed a walk through observing life here as the way traditions kept up survive. It was enjoyable and interesting learning a little about these Moroccan people and it was something we had not seen in other areas visited. Some areas were in poor condition, but generally not so bad considering the age of structures. Overall, a bit of history on Moroccan culture.

Our Tour Guide Said B took us to meet his family in Rissani. We chilled and had some snacks and obviously tea. From there we went the market, took a look at the donkey parking, bought some dates and headed off to the Desert camp.

This fortified village - KSAR - still houses several extended families. The complex is magnificent and some parts ornate and splendid but time was not very kind to this interesting structure. The head of the main family recently died. Many books of the compound need renovation and repair. It seems that, at least partially, the owner families rely on and benefit from the money donated by the visitors. They supply a guide if you want to visit the ksar and allow even for a privilege of seeing parts of their private quarters.

While the Kasbah has had a long history, it is very much in need of restoration. The walls are crumbling. Our guide explained to us the functions of the different areas. One has to try very hard to imagine its former grandeur.
There are still about 30 families living there.

Members of the same extended family have been living in this Kasbah style Berber village for over four hundred years. Our guide brought us into the village through the main gate and introduced us to several of the families who still live there. Some of the property has been lovingly restored thanks to the gifts from visitors eager to see the life style of these people. Yet, some of the village is much in need of repair and restoration.

We were shown into the living quarters of one family. We got to explore what must have been the home of a prosperous extended family at one time. These people live simply, yet, they seem content with their lives. I don't think the public can simply walk into this private space. Ask your local guide to bring you here. Enjoy.

Ottimo esempio di Ksar tutto sommato ben conservato, dove è possibile vedere il forno originale ancora funzionante. Al centro dello ksar è stato realizzato un riad.
