We made a pre-paid reservation for 3:30 pm. When we arrived there was no one there and the rental tent was closed. What a disappointment. I give them a 0 for customer service. Don't risk ruining an expensive vacation on these bike vendors. Go through the National Park to the other side of the lava flow and hike in.

Kaimu rentals, now known as See Hawaii Adventures Is the perfect picture of Aloha! I called several months ago to get information about renting bikes and getting up close to see the volcanoes and the employees were very knowledgeable and helpful. We love that they provide all the gear, including flashlights, helmets & first aid kits for your adventure. We had every intention of renting bikes through Kaimu Rentals but unfortunately, due to our thanksgiving plans running way over the scheduled time, we had to cancel and were all so upset b/c this was the one activity we were looking forward to. However, Teresa was more than helpful and understanding with us as she knows how to run a business; Aloha and Maholo to See Hawaii adventures for turning our disappointment into yet another reason to love the Hawaiian islands🏝🚵🏼‍♀️🌋

We did not reserve but we were there in May which is not the high season. Just showed up in the morning about 8:30am after driving over from Kona side so we didn't think it would be busy. LOTS of bike rentals here, so we just kinda picked one. Bikes are a little used but most places they all looked the same and that environment is rough on bikes. There is a lock and a little pouch to go with each bike. Can't remember if there was a water holder. The bikes got us there and back, brakes and gears worked fine. We did it early as it gets really hot on the black lava.

We decided to us Kaimu rentals for their early morning shuttle service to the Lava Flow. We arrived at about 04:40 in the morning and the staff couldn't find the keys for the shuttle from last night's staff. Dax was fantastic!!! He came up with a plan and truly looked after us. We would not hesitate to recommend the service from this team. All the guys in the morning that we spoke with were really friendly and entertaining but Dax stood out for his hospitality and servie - they are lucky to have him on staff! Thank you again for a great and memorable service this morning!!!

We reserved two bikes online and were met at 4:30am as promised with two bikes, two helmets, a lock and first aid kit. We were also provided with detailed directions on how to view the lava flowing into the Pacific as well as how to traverse the lava field to get closer to the lava.

Highly recommend viewing in the morning. It was very peaceful and not crowded at all - just two other people that time of the morning. Visit the national park next and sleep on the beach in the afternoon!

It's a nice view of lava on one side with the sunrise to your back.

Kaimu Rentals really met our special needs on this trip! We really appreciated their ability to tailor their services. We biked and watched the lava flow!

Let me explain. We made arrangements to visit Hawaii and one week later my husband tore his meniscus. Injury or not, he wanted to make the trip, and equally, I wanted to experience the lava flow every way it was possible, including making the bike trip to see the flow into the sea at dusk. Studying options, I noted that Kaimu offered shuttle service about half way to the lava flow, and also had electric bikes. DH couldn't walk distances, but he was rehabbing the knee using a stationary bike, and thought he might be able to make the trip with an electric bike. I emailed staff at Kaimu and they had another customer with similar needs who had been successful, so we reserved equipment on line, and did it!

I would suggest extreme caution should you do this. There is about a 5 to 10 minute walk at the very end of the journey over a black lava field. At night it's hard to see exactly where you are stepping-it's black on black, and not flat or paved. We returned earlier than most while there was still some light, and stepped more than slowly to minimize problems, The bike ride back to the pick up point at night was challenging (actually, more for me on a standard bike than DH-he got there quickly).

But, we DID it! The lava views were stunning and memorable. The electric bike was fully charged and serviced, instructions on how to use it complete, the shuttle return service reliable, and the standard bike I rented worked well. Many, many thanks to the staff at Kaimu who went out of their way to help us experience this amazing part of nature!

Kaimu Rentals was the first licensed & insured company to rent bikes to folks wanting to see the lava. That fact, plus the recommendation of our friend who lives in the area, made us reserve two bikes on-line. We rented our bikes at 5:00 PM and returned at 8:30. My husband and I are not "spring chickens;" but, since we've ridden bikes a lot in our younger years we had no problem getting back into the groove. There were three employees to help us: make sure the bikes & helmets fit us, check the small flashlights that fit onto the handle bars, show the route, explain the bike lock and the first aid kit w/telephone number, make sure we had sufficient water, and give me encouragement. I'm glad their bikes don't have headlights...when we were riding back in the dark, some people riding toward us, with bike headlights and headlamps on their foreheads were kinda' blinding. The two small flashlights, fitted onto the handlebars, are angled down to the ground. You can remove one or both for hand-held viewing when you want to start walking. For even brighter illumination, while walking, you might want to bring another flashlight along. I'm glad that I brought our good binoculars along. Seeing the lava flows into the ocean was mesmerizing and photographing the scene was addicting. The sun drops below Mauna Loa a good 20 minutes earlier than the official sunset time. In the daylight, we saw multiple puffs of smoke down the mountainside. Once it was dark, in place of smoke, we saw a good-sized river of lava plus many breakout spots. Upon our return, we asked about negative rental reviews we'd read; and, the gal said that they definitely changed their maintenance folks.

These guys are open all day. No, despite what they say at the volcano NP, you don't have to wait until 3pm. We picked up 4 bikes and they were able to easily accommodate all of us - 8 yr old with a 20" and 6'6" DH with a 29" and all the inbetweens. The road to the lava is tough - our 8 yr old made it out but took the shuttle back (which still required him to bike ~1 mi over loose gravel and strong winds) but very doable if you are reasonably fit. Do bring lots of water esp if doing at the height of the day. There is no shade. Our bikes were in good shape and staff was super!!

Everything started off great. We even received reassurance that we could call by cell if any problems. When we did call due to chain off, we ended up waiting over 45 minutes for rescue. The rest of our group went ahead to enjoy the sights. We did have time to view all but ended up riding back in the dark (no moon) flashlights provided are ok...but it's still a little scary. Manager offered to refund cost of 1 bike rental, which we accepted. Still, I would go again.
