Two things I really wish I knew about this bike and hike tour. First, the beginning of the bike and hike is about one hour 15 minutes from the entrance of Volcano National Park. I should have figured that out sooner! I thought we would have more time to explore the national park than we ended up having.

Second, we buzzed out of the park to get to our tour on time, to find out that it really wasn't feasible to go for the hike. After over an hour of driving, we pulled up their rental tent to find out that if we wanted to see the lava it would take about 10 hours round trip and we would be hiking until about midnight. The lava was that far away from where we were starting. The young man at the rental tent was very kind and up front that he would be willing to take us, but that it would take 10 hours well into the dark. I was glad he was up front about it, but extremely frustrated that a call was not made to us before we drove there. We did receive a confirmation email the day before, so I thought we would be all set. While we were really looking forward to this experience, my recommendation would be to call the day before to see where the lava is located and if the hike is do-able.

This e-bike rental is located before the other vendors. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The other vendors have a bus and actually try to get tourists off the main road, advertising "free parking" and shuttle you to their rentals. Our family of 4 loved the e-bikes and appreciated having them after the long walk over the lava fields. The bikes are new and reliable, well worth renting! Cheers:)

Our group (8 people, ranging between 18-65 years old) rented the bikes and it made getting to and from the lava field hike much more enjoyable. For groups of 8 or more they also offer slightly discounted group rate. The electric bikes are tons of fun. After hiking for ~2 hours on the rough lava rock you will be very relieved to have the pedal assist for the way back to your car. They also provide a bottle of water, a backpack, and a head light with the rental, which are very helpful, especially if you go to see the lava for sunset (start at 4 pm), since that hike back to the main road would be awful in the dark without a light. Sunset is also the best time to go because the orange glow from the molten lava is far more visible in the dark. I recommend wearing good hiking shoes and some gloves, since a couple of our group slipped on the lava rock and cut up their hands a little breaking their fall. Overall this experience was one of the best during our vacation on the big island. The staff were also very friendly and helpful.

Hawaii Lava Bikes was a lifesaver on our trip to the lava flow. We had NO idea what we were getting into when we drove in and parked right at sunset. We thought we'd have a quick walk, see the lava and then go home. We had no idea it was a 4 mile walk/bike past the car park to get to the lava. We walked past all the bike rentals and thank goodness stopped to look at the map of where we were before we continued on. I was 31 weeks pregnant and did not think I could ride a bike, so these electric bikes were such a treat. I was really scared and thought I'd fall and break my face/hurt the baby, but the ride was great. The crew that grabbed our bikes and headlamps were so nice! They showed us the ins and outs of the bikes and gave us confidence to do this. And off we went in the dark for our adventure. Thank you so much Hawaii Lava Bikes! Because of the electric bikes, I was able to see that amazing flowing lava that a 7.5 month pregnant lady wouldn't have been able to see otherwise!

I highly recommend Hawaii lava bikes. Shawn was our guide and he made sure we were all safe and had a great experience. This hike has uneven footing, hot lava under your feet and running down the mountain, the terrain is unmarked. The price is well worth your life. The electric bikes were so cool and an experience in themselves. Thanks Shawn for making sure we had a great time! Take the sunset tour and wear hiking shoes and light weight long pants. Have fun!

Hawaii Lava Bikes - what an adventure!! Easy to ride E-bikes take you quite a distance to the third gate - where you then have a grueling 2.5 mile hike, each way, to the lava - but well worth it - a must see for anyone! After the tough hike back across the lava field, in the dark, you are pretty much "done", but then you get to jump on your E-bike for the easy ride back, while almost all others are walking or riding regular bikes. Thank goodness for Hawaii Lava E-bikes!! A must do adventure and the staff is so amazing, helpful and informative.

Four of us rented bikes from Hawaii Lava Bikes. Two of us are in our 60s and two are in their 70s. We opted to rent our bikes for the extra hour (5 total) and would definitely recommend it. We had a great experience riding the bikes as far as we could and then hiking up to see the lava flowing (strongly recommend hiking poles). Even with them, one in our party fell on our way back to the bikes. It took us a good 2 1/2 hours to return to our bikes. We most likely would have taken less time if one in our group wasn't cut, bleeding, and bruised from her fall. Even with the injuries suffered by one in our group we would all recommend the trip, but only with the use of the electric bikes and hiking poles. We were all tired and sore when we returned to our bikes and were glad we didn't have to pedal on the return trip.

Had an amazing Lava viewing experience guided by Shawn. You bike for about 4-5 miles, then mount your bikes then hike for about 2 miles. We got so close to the lava, we couldnt have gotten closer by any other means. The electric bikes were awesome in zooming to our destination without hardly using the pedals. Having a guide helped us in navigating the terrain much easier in the dark and helped us learn more about the lava flow and the volcanoes.

Highly recommend this tour! We did the evening electric bike and hike. The day we went it was about a 7-8 mile ride and about a 4 mile round-trip hike to the lava and back. Having a bike and guide made a huge difference. There were only 5 people on the tour, and Sean did a great job showing us things on the lava field and more or less leading us on a direct path to the lava breakout. He gave us plenty of water breaks and made sure everyone was keeping up and kept people on their own from following us too closely. Once at the lava he took pictures for us and let us look around at the breakouts. After about 45 minutes we headed back, and without a guide, good luck getting back to your bike on your own. Sean got us back exactly on top of where we parked our bikes. The electric bike was a big help on the way back as no pedaling was needed. Overall a great trip and the money for a guide and bike was 100% worth it. Some hints: bring lots of water and bring some snacks for the hike. Also wear shoes you don't mind throwing out. The lava tore the soles up.

We learned that over the years, the location of lava has shifted. 8 years ago, it was at the end of highway 130. As of January 2018, the lava is about 4-5 miles from the end of highway 130. We learned that we can bike about 3 miles in, after which we need to be on foot. On foot, the hike was about 2 miles one way, and takes about 1-1.5 tiresome hours.
We reserved a couple of the electric bikes online the day before, and boy was it a good decision! The bike ride was about 3 miles to gate #3, where you need to lock the bikes and set afoot. The bike route has gravel and very low hills, and can be easily done with a regular bike, but the electric bike saves you on two fronts - firstly, you conserve energy going in, and secondly, after the hike when you are drained of all energy, the bike does all the work for you.
There are multiple bike rentals with similar sounding names, so make sure you look for "Hawaii Lava Bikes." I could be wrong but I think they are the only vendors of electric bikes. It was well worth the $45, because this hike is excruciating for the occasional hiker. The bikes are simple to operate and have enough juice to power 2-3 round trips, so you don't have to worry about draining battery.
We interacted with two people over at the rental place - Kai (spelling?) and Becky. They went over how to use the bike, potential caveats, what to expect etc. They provided us with water, a bike helmet, and headlamps. We rented the bikes for 4 hours at 4 PM, which was great for the sunset experience. On our way back from the lava flow area, it was pitch dark and we were stumbling in the darkness trying not to lose our way to gate#3. Becky was leading a guided tour for another couple and she recognized us on her way back (my wife had blue highlights in her hair) - and she helped us find the way for the last quarter mile. That was very relieving because we were terrified of losing our way. We finally got to gate#3, unlocked our bikes, and cruised past other tired hikers/bikers back to the rental location in a matter of minutes. We had jelly legs at the end of our hike so this was a lifesaver.
On a side note, I observed two things about Becky and her guided tour. We did not take the guided tour, but perhaps you can use this info in case you are thinking about it - (1) she navigated using the stars (Orion's belt), so she didn't have to use any GPS and she didn't lose her way, and (2) while we bee-lined towards our destination, she used her flashlight to find the path of least resistance/rocks/cracks/crevices, and that adds up to conserved energy.
