One review mentioned that there are limited tourist activities on the reservation. I would agree. From what I saw it is beautiful wide open land with few amenities or services; although I did not experience the fishing, camping, hiking, or skiing. From what I understand, there is a lot of outdoor recreation available throughout this beautiful area.
I did visit. . .
The casino (which has a hotel as well)
Fort Apache and the Fort Apache Museum
The Kinishba Ruins (very cool)

I'd rate the White Mountain Apache Reservation as having some of the most beautiful country and best camping in Arizona. We stayed at the Upper Log Campground over Memorial Day and found it clean, quiet and very beautiful. Its along the banks of the North Fork of the White River, which is crystal clear and has enough trout hiding in it to make it quite interesting.

I was visiting the high school in Whiteriver on business, and was surprised that the reservation pops up for review on Trip Advisor as a "thing to do". I would not call the reservation a tourist destination. The scenery is lovely here, but there are extremely limited services and little to any cell phone coverage. Not that I would discourage anyone from visiting, but just be prepared, i.e., you won't find visitor's centers, restrooms, et cetera.

Yes, it is listed as an Indian Reservation and there is a modest local native peoples exhibition center. Your entry fee also includes the fairly well preserved and relatively unknown Ft Apache. Not unlike other 'forts' operated by the National Parks, this features a number of restored buildings from the mid 1800's. Some are used as office s by the local Bureau of Indian Affairs and you may walk into all of them.

We toured the reservation and even purchased souvenirs. It was amazing to see the old dormitories, hand made tents, schools, etc. The current state of reservation as far as housing is quite sad. Most of the yards don't receive care and many of the homes were outdated and in poor condition with the yards being full of junk cars. The only grocery store on the reservation was a Basha grocery store and it was so old that we opted to shop some other place. We did stop at the Basha parking lot to buy some hats and other goods from local vendors.

First of all don't go here and look down your nose. The average household makes $18,000 a year. This is a forgotten place---remember you are a guest. With that being said here's my review.
The pros:
1. Nice folks
2. Main road was cleared of snow---there are many that aren't!
3. Know the map and where you are going.
4. Beautiful scenery ---take lots of pictures.
5. Has a feeling of "history" and "old Hollywood" ---looks like a John Ford movie.
6. Outdoor activities +++
7. This is rural America---if you like that then you will like it here.
8. Drive through Salt Canyon was amazing. Take your time! Watch weather.
9. Safe? I had no issues.
10. Lots of outdoor markers to stop and see if you have time.
The Cons
1. Cows, dogs, horses wander around--- in addition to wild animals. Drive careful. Idk if animals roaming around is a pro or con ---to me it isn't but drive careful.
2. Lodging is very limited---1 motel.
3. I saw 1 restaurant on the main road ---Burger King.
4. Verizon users you will have zero service!!!! This occurred the moment I got on/off reservation.
5. Be wise just like visiting any other place---.

Don 't even waste your time going there. Roads not marked well for getting to boat ramp and store. Road closed over the dam, so can not get to store that way. Indian tribe has not maintained this property in a proper manner. This area could be a jewel of a destination if the tribe gave any reasonable effort to maintain their property. Lake surrounded by old boarded up cabins left from the days the tribe cancelled everybody's lease. Too bad the tribe has not shown more initiative to develop the abandoned cabins. They could have a cash flow of over a half million dollars clear each year by renting them out.

Winter offers skiing on the White Mountain while summer has amazing camping and fishing in many, many lakes in the area. So many hiking trails to choose from. Natives are quite people are friendly. Food choices are slim, but you can drive 20 minutes to casino or just a little further to Show Low, AZ.
