Given all the big name museums in New Haven this small (and cheaper-$3 for Seniors) venue is a nice change of pace. We only had a limited time so we chose this one. A lot of information on the history of NH (with virtually no mention of Yale) plus interesting special exhibits. And the parking is free.

This small museum is a great place to do research. They have a lot of manuscripts of local people from the establishment of the city through the 20th century.

Recently attended 2 talks there and had the opportunity to explore current exhibitions. One talk was on a local black woman who was the first black woman federal judge. Who knew. They do great public talks mostly free about very interesting topics. Their exhibits are deeply and carefully curated. They have the best and maybe most intensive Amistad collection. World class archive for the old New Haven Colony.

Everybody who come to New Haven must go to New Haven Museum. Here is great possibility to find out when the city was established, who did it, read about the famous long-forgotten Davenport stone, learn that New Haven was home to first switchboard, see many wonderful photos and paintings. This is a mandatory visit.

I wanted to learn a little more about the history of New Haven and Connecticut so I thought I'd visit the museum. It's a little smaller than I imagined and it mainly features artefacts and artwork as opposed to plaques of educational information however it does offer a good insight into New Haven's history. There's little pockets of information in each exhibit and the exhibits do vary to offer a wider range of history. My favourite exhibit was the Cinque Was Here exhibit which was probably the most informative of all the exhibits and shed a really interesting light on New Haven's past. It's a good way to kill an hour or so.

Thank you for visiting the Museum! We appreciate your feedback on our exhibits and hope to add more educational "big picture" labels in the future.

Beautiful old building, helpful staff upon arrival and well laid out. It just didn’t blow my skirt up. A couple of things. First we were tired with sore bones, feet, etc. We were surprised that not one museum we had visited in two days had a cafe for a coffee or ANYTHING to drink. But I tried to put myself in someone’s shoes from New Haven visiting my hometown’s history museum, and they probably would not have been that overwhelmed either. New Haven is certainly rich with history, and the exhibits on WWI photos and correspondence from a local boy as well as the Clocks to Lollipops section displaying items first made in New Haven were significant, but there was so much to read to piece it all together that we just ran out of gas. The Amistad exhibit was interesting, but if you had seen the movie, it provided no new facts. I had not seen the movie but was familiar with the story; yet, a fact I learned was that John Quincy Adams represented the African defendants on appeal. Maybe if you are doing many attractions in one day, do this one first. Admission charge is small, and there is a discount for seniors. Apparently there is an excellent library here that is free for members and $4 for non-members.

Such a well-run organization with wonderfully curated exhibits.
Both special exhibits and permanent.
Subjects as wide-ranging as Tattoos & WW1.
Something for all ages.
Easy to get to from I-95.

My husband and I visited the New Haven Museum in New Haven, Connecticut on Friday, November 10th. It is a small museum but provides a very good history of New Haven with a good mixture of many different types of items on display.
The ‘New Haven Illustrated’ exhibit shows a nice history of the city from 1638 through to the present time, including Eli Whitney’s cotton gin, well preserved furniture, paintings, manufactured goods as well as a number of other different types of artifacts. The exhibit on the ‘Amistad Story’ outlines this event with very good supporting artifacts and detailed write-ups, all quite informative. The ‘From Clocks to Lollipop: Made in New Haven’ exhibit focuses on the production of consumer goods made in New Haven over the years, with many such goods on display. This is a nicely done exhibit. The Maritime New Haven exhibit was quite interesting providing the city’s maritime history, including the important role of the harbor and the Long Wharf area. There are also exhibits on ‘The Courier: Tales from the Great War’ (World War I) as well as ‘Old School Ink: New Haven’s Tattoos’, including the many contributions of New Haven’s tattoo artists. In addition, there is a very nice collection of Decorative Arts that are made to functionally serve a purpose in the ‘Form & Function: Decorative Arts from the Collection’ exhibit.
The museum includes much more than what I have mentioned above. All the exhibits in the museum have very good supporting write-ups with interesting details. The building where the museum is located is quite historic featuring great colonial revival architecture. We recommend a visit to this museum for a thorough history of New Haven. It is a nice, enjoyable, educational, informative and interesting museum to visit.

Born in New Haven in 1946 and back for a visit. Enjoyed the displays, period furnishings, and the staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. Everyone from the New Haven area should make a visit!

I truly enjoyed my visit. It has been many, many years since I visited this museum. My return was a joy. I especially like the photo, maps and drawings of "old" New Haven. Would love to see more, especially from different sections of the city. Also, I found the Amistad exhibit worth recommending to my friends.
