I had no idea how much I would enjoy stopping into this seemingly-unassuming (yet beautiful) building. My husband wanted to go in, and I grudgingly went along, not expecting it to be as impressive as it was. We were greeted by a very nice lady at the front desk who told us a bit about the short film showing on constant loop and the school room upstairs. I admired the tile work and beautiful staircase, and was also impressed on the second floor, which was quite elegant, especially considering it was once used as a school for the kids of cigar-making factories from Cuba. It really looked more like a small ballroom. The film was short, about 20 minutes, but just the right amount to learn a lot about Cuba and the cigar-making business in Key West, and those leaders who began the journey to Key West and fought for the liberation from Spain. I highly recommend this as a cultural and informational stop for those many people walking up and down Duval. I would say a half hour is needed, but you can certainly stay longer if you want. I am really glad we stopped here.

The Institute wasn't open last year when we were in town, so when we saw it was open this time, we stopped by to see what the place was all about.
We were greeted by a gentleman who was extremely knowledgeable about both the building and the Key West/Cuba connection. He was an absolute delight to talk with. We watched the film, which was about 20 minutes long, and it was informative. There was so much we didn't know and we walked through the exhibits and the rest of the building with some new-found knowledge and appreciation.
From an architectural perspective, the building is beautiful. The tiles are from Spain and you can see the Moorish influence in the interior.
The Institute is free of charge to visit and donations are appreciated. I recommend stopping by and learning more about this incredible building and why it exists.

If your into this history the drop in at no cost. Hours are limited so check the outside post for date/time. A short movie of historical perspective runs every 20 minutes.

First of all this place's entrance is FREE and I was impressed with the amount of information about The Cuban history and how they migrated to the USA.
It was such an emotional time to be here.

A Cuban-American icon, The San Carlos Institute located at 516 Duval Street in the heart of Key West is MUST SEE and is awesome for history! Now a FREE museum (they accept donations and I always donate), it’s a great find and arguably one of the most beautiful buildings in Key West. Cuba has a lot of tied history with the USA, especially in Key West. Here you will see artifacts, art, documents, and other historical Cuban and Cuban American pieces. Devote about 30 mins to an hour and you won’t regret it.

There isn't a while lot to see here but architecturally, it's worth a shiet stop. The 18ft door is awesome, the tiles are all from Sevilla, that and the marble stairs are worth a look.

I had walked past this building many times during my stay in Key West but on my second to last day, I finally went in. The gentleman running the place told me about the significance of the building and how it was a refuge for the Cuban people of KW for a large period of time in the 1800s. The interior of the building is exquisite and it served as a school and community center. When it was severely damaged in the early 1900s, the Cuban government paid for and restored it to its current state. Worth some time and it is free.
