Tolles Erlebnis.

Come on, how often do you get to pet a moose?! Not to mention eat moose cheese and eat moose stew. Apparently, moose is something people in Sweden eat, but that you won't find in restaurants. As they explained during the tour, for various reasons, the moose population needs to be kept down through hunting so 100,000 moose get hunted every year and these get eaten by the hunters' family and friends.
Here's how to have a fine day getting to Algens Hus:
Take the 10:10am bus (about 144 sek round trip) from the main bus station next to the train station from Umea to Bjurholm, which is about a 45 minute trip. Go across the street from the bus stop and rent a bike for 50 sek for the day from the TI. There is also a supermarket and a cheap diner at the stop, in case you want to supply yourself with water or coffee. But don't eat at the diner, even though it's a good diner. You'll want to save room in your stomach for yummy moose stew.
Then cycle about 9km or 40 minutes to Algens hus. I used Google Maps; the TI wasn't as helpful as you'd expect in providing the route. But it's fairly straightforward anyway. A right turn out of the TI, a left turn when the road Ts at a gas station, and then continue most of the way until you see a bunch of signs, among them a sign for Algens hus. There's no bike path and there are fast cars and trucks along the road, but they gave me pretty wide berth. The road has some gradual long uphills and downhills, so you may have to adjust the time estimate according to your fitness level. I hadn't biked in many years, so I was probably a bit on the slow slide. Luckily the scenery along the way is lovely, so you may want to also give yourself time to take some photos on the bridge above the river or of the wildflowers along the road.
The place is open from 10-6 usually, not sure if it's every day of the week though. Upon arrival, you could start right away with your lunch. And be sure it includes the moose stew. I only had time to sample a few bites, but it was tender and delicious, not gamy at all.
Then after paying admission of 120, you can go visit, feed, and pet the moose. They have young moose, male moose, and female moose. All were so docile that even kids could pet them, though everyone approached them cautiously. At some point (the time I went, it was around 2pm), the moose enclosures are closed for an hour. Then a half hour tour is given in English in the museum while a slide show plays in Swedish in a separate room. Then the groups are swapped. The slide show plays in English and the tour is given in Swedish.
I thought the tour was fascinating, and the tour guide (the son who runs the place with his father) spoke excellent English.
Afterwards, I bought some cheese to take home (small jar was 75 sek). It was very creamy and different from any cheese I'd ever had, so I'd say worth the purchase.
I made it just in time back to the TI, which closes at 4pm. And caught the 4:15pm bus which drops you off at a train station in a different town. From there, about 10 min later, you can catch a train back to the central train station in Umea. (the round trip bus ticket you bought in the morning works for the bus/train combo back to Umea)
And there you have it. A very pleasant and unique experience in the heart of Sweden!
